Mahlati says AFASA is working to ensure that all farmers with potential are supported. “We are profiling successful farmers to highlight and encourage each other, particularly black farmers. When they are supported sufficiently, you can succeed. It is not about race, but whether you are supported sufficiently.”

Why do successful farmers need help?

The stupid "outrage" in this thread. There are many white farmers that support the idea of helping black farmers, some even donating parts of their farms to the cause. And if this works, you my white little suburban friend, stand to benefit.

When the farmers fail, then they lose their possessions like anyone else being financed, right? Lesson learned?

Difference between successful and "with potential". Also, I believe farmers, like others businesses, need access to funding at some point.

More racist drivel from the ANC. Read my lips idiots: It will not work.
Racist policies have not worked in the past, are not working now and will not work in future. #LiveWithIt
I see Motsepe foundation and the banks, where did you get the ANC?

He is the Foreigner, but there are others who are harping on about the ANC, must be the same whatsapp group.

Shut up, I thought he was anc lol :( So used to anc talking about stuff like this. But anc or not, they tried it many times before and failed. If Motsepe and co can make it work then go for it and good luck. Chances of this being very successful though... free from political interference and corruption etc....??

Since it isn't done with my tax money, they can do what they like.

But, throwing money at the problem never solves it...
One of the reasons emerging farmers fail is due to lack of access to financing because the land they get handed by government is leased. And they are not able to use it as security. So, this is worth trying I think, the honest ones will make a success of it.

Firstly they have to distinguish between commercial farming and subsistence farming.
There is plenty viable commercial farming land in the Ingonyama trust. The problem is the tenants cannot access finance because they don't own the land. They don't own the land because the "king" owns it. The king won't let the government, which gave them the land, redistribute it to those who live on it and can make a living off it, because the royal family would lose its income and all of its power. BTW there is 3000 square meters of land in the trust for every single man, woman and child that lives in KZN, regardless of who they are.

White farmers are going out of business all the time - if they aren't being brutally murdered and tortured.

The agricultural output of SA is dropping as we cannot compete with the subsidies offered by the USA and EU to their farmers.

So what do the geniuses do? Offer a subsidy to only those farmers who, at present, are not skilled enough to take over. Great.

Even if this was done in a non corrupt manner, it is A) racist, B) against South Africa's interests which should be protecting ALL farmers in order to secure food production.

Very nice initiative by Mr. Motsepe using private money. I hope they select well and SA benefits from this.

During apartheid, inequality was enforced by the government.

During THE NEW DAWN™, inequality is being enforced by the government.

What's changed? Public attitude towards this. Back then it wasn't OK, now its OK and all is good and is encouraged on a grand scale. Stick it to the evil white man. Get your own back african style.

Africa is littered with examples of where this hasn't worked, where it has failed and where people are now in misery as a direct result of these stupid policies.

My unborn daughter, who had nothing to do with apartheid, will now suffer as a result. I must now educate her that purely due to the colour of her skin she must now forever be sorry for Jan Van Verwoerds bad decisions.

Women fall under "designated groups" under AA/EE laws.

News in AWB anounces Multi Bilion rand fund for White farmers...

That's racist...

Oh but someone will make an excuse.
Listen. Its farmers they feed us. IT should not matter what colour skin they have.
But like the last 24 years have shown us, one racist regime replaced another.

If done correctly, with no corruption, this could be a good thing. It's very difficult for black people to get access to agriculture. They should give qualified farmers opportunity though, if this will just be another cadre enrichment scheme, or giving farms to people with no training and experience it will go down the same way as previous initiatives.

Its very difficult for ANYBODY that has no access to capital to get started in agriculture. Or any industry for that matter that requires significant capital investment upfront.

and?
Not every white farmer has access to financing.
IT is still racist. It they want to help farmers they should help farmers.

It is racist no matter how you turn it.
No amount of lipstick on a pig will change the fact that it is a pig.

Help our farmers. Thousands need help not just black farmers.

I've been in agriculture for all my working life, black and coloured people are almost exclusively labourers. Should we just say f'em, they should stay in their lane (this is due to our history, whether you want to admit it or not). Or do we actually give them a fair chance to make a success of their own ventures?

What do you suggest we do to transform our agricultural industry, because it does need transformation. That shouldn't even be a question.
