Motsepe announces multi-billion rand fund for black farmers

As with all of these racially targeted initiatives or quotas they should rather use a means test and make it for anyone who qualifies. Make a multi-billion rand fund for any aspirant farmer from a poor background that wouldn't otherwise qualify for finance. By definition, that would mostly encompass the group they're trying to promote anyway - there is, therefore, no morally or ethically acceptable justification for restricting it to one skin colour. And it's also much fairer, because when it is defined only by race and not by means it ends up benefitting only the well connected (and already wealthy) black elite who know how to game the system, and it also allows them to keep on feeding from the trough long after they have already empowered themselves. It's the same as education quotas which often grants resources to students from black families that are already affluent thus depriving many who really need it.

It's not really all his money, it will be mostly money from banks by the looks of things.
I can't think that any real bank(not a vbs type bank) will back something like this that's doomed to fail without the propper security in place.

The high level talks will most likely remain just that. And if something real materialises it will require land as security.

When was the last time you had a look at that land ?
Try a trip to Greytown and then down through the Tugela Valley to Dundee
or
Even better -- from Greytown to Kranskop then on the Zuma highway to Eshowe
or
Via the Tugfela valley and Melmoth to ULUNDI

There are a number of variations
The land of the Ingonyama Trust IS ALL of the old KwaZulu HOMELAND
The land of GOATS and EROSION !
Try the R56 to Kokstad. Hardly any erosion and miles of open veld. Or how about at the bottom of Lundi's hill on the R617 all along the river. Or the road from Ncwadi into the back of Richmond, backing onto the Byrne Valley. Farms bought from white farmers in the 60's and 70's.

And like any farming, it can't always be nice irrigated vegetable fields and orchards, but what about game farming, forestry, hay, .......

These are just some basic examples.

Meh, if it truly is private funds only, then spend it whatever way you wish, be it black farmers or excavating the hell out of Candice van der Merwe's every orifice.

That's a tad cheaper than a few billion

Farming, especially under drought, is an industry run on securities. Though I believe this is a good idea, there are, however, already agri-institutions supporting black run agricultural sectors. Motsepe though is willing to pump money in this, money which I don’t believe was previously available and doing this in cooperation with the banking sectors.

Just like the Yes4Youth program, this is a black-orientated program. To do this in cooperation with the banks to launch this multi-billion ‘capital’ program, how will this be applied:

The fund will unlock opportunities for specifically black agriculturists and give them preferential access to loans.

That is a strong word applied there. As long as securities within this sector aren’t exclusive then I believe this program may succeed and involve everyone.

Having land and having access to funding doesn't make you a commercial farmer.
Please remember this once the wheels come off your little rainbow pipe dream and you cry tears of blood.

What a load of crap, imagine if this was for white farmers only? The outcry, the uproar? its 2019, when are we going to stop this ****? Anyway this will just be more corruption and rubbish, give it time
It is happening though. It's just that whites don't make announcements about it.

The stupid "outrage" in this thread. There are many white farmers that support the idea of helping black farmers, some even donating parts of their farms to the cause. And if this works, you my white little suburban friend, stand to benefit.
3 little words..

If

This

Works

I say give them another chance, despite the dismal track record. Maybe this time they'll lift themselves out of corruption and manage to get something to work. Highly doubtful, but yeah carry on s'longs I don't have to pay for it.

More racist drivel from the ANC. Read my lips idiots: It will not work.
Racist policies have not worked in the past, are not working now and will not work in future. #LiveWithIt
I get the racist part, but it seems to be a private project in all fairness.

Hmmm, I've met Patrice personally and I'd have to say he is one of the only people that I'd say was selfless enough to be involved with such a project. His team are usually on the ball and follows some sound business decisions. Here's hoping that this would be the same without any political interference but rather sound business principles.

You referring to the part about the 20 students?
Entire article. They're not going to fork out money, dump it at the farm house and hope for the best. There's going to be ongoing support. Since private sector is will be involved, I think some kind of mentorship and oversight as well. It also looks like each case will be evaluated individually and awarded based on a set criteria.

Also see post #29.

much better than kicking white farmers off farms as a way to create black farmers, the article is not specific on whether non-blacks will be rejected completely

I somehow doubt that should some white ou, example, Steve decide to build a whites-only school or creche with his own money, everyone would be so accommodating and ok with everything..

In the end it's up to the individual emerging black farmer to actually perform, that will also involve listening to those who have made it in the industry and not going out and buying a Wabenzi or new farm bakkie but putting finance back into the farm.
They also need to be prepared to not become instant millionaires and realize they working for their future offspring to be successful and so forth.

Mentor-ship is also key here as well.

So wait buying new farm bakkies only reserved for white farmers? Black farmer must buy a 1982 Toyota Hilux?
