Now this is loooong overdue!

Moan-ica Seles. Maria Shriek-apova. For years, the grunts and shrieks of top female tennis players at Wimbledon have provided fodder for Britain's pun-loving tabloid journalists. Armed with a Bruel & Kjaer sound-level meter that they refer to as the "grunt-o-meter," they have at various times informed readers that tennis players are noisier than a pneumatic drill, a police siren, or a 747 taking off. But at this year's Wimbledon, grunting will be put under more serious scrutiny: officials have confirmed that they will be meeting to discuss whether to make loud exhalations during play illegal.

Quiet please: will tennis pros give up the grunt?

I read that Martina Navratilova said it must be banned as the noise used to put her off her game and gave the opponent an unfair advantage. I just think is damned unseemly to have all that shrieking, I often turn off the telly when it gets too bad!

Lol :D

They should reserve those groans for the bedroom

Nha its a breathing tech.

look at when Kallis bowls or when some of the martial arts guys exhale before / while striking.

And if it bothers you then put the TV on mute :p

Also if it bothers the other player(s) he/she/they can get ear plugs.

You guys are crazy :D!

I'm going to give it one last go to convince you that it's a BAD thing :p

Firstly, how can it possibly be beneficial for a player to make a noise akin to the decibel level of a plane taking off? Here I'm not talkig about the player I'm thinking of us the poor fans. This can't be a pleasant level of noise to be subjected to ... surely?

@devill ... earplugs were found to be detrimental to the performance of a player. An Australian study showed that being able to track the ball using audible means is important in tennis.

Even Bolliteri now agrees something should be done :)

What more do you need? I say take points away from these grunters and they'll soon learn to tow the line :D

it is annoying and should be banned, Imagine how McEnroe would have gone on about it if he played with it.

I dont know about this. Like in other sports (Karate), a loud sound helps the athlete focus a lot of power into their shots. Is it fair to deprive the athlete from being able to play to the best of their ability?

But these telling these players to stop their "grunts" , shrieks etc etc will be detrimental to their performance ;)

Groaning is cheating...pure and simple and that is the reason it should be banned. All these arguments about breathing and focus are irrelevant, the players know they do it and the reason they do it is to distract.

Tennis players react to the sound of the ball on racket as well as visually. The impact gives them an awareness of how hard the ball is hit and allows for a slightly quicker reaction.

Players grunt to mask the sound of the ball.

Other than that whether they want to groan anywhere else is up to them.
