Movie Mini-Review Thread - Part III

Hundreds of Beavers - ???/10

I tried, I really did, but 20 minutes or so was all I could handle - You have to be very, I repeat very, high to get through this.

8/10

Really enjoyed it, being a believer that the moon landing was faked, this movie shows that it could have been true, the fake part.

Amusing to watch.

2/10
The crappest movie I have watched this year.

What is going on with Nicholas Cage lately? One crappy movie after the other. Has he really sunk so low? Renfield, now this?

Wonka 7.5/10

Not a tan of musicals but this film felt more disney than Disney. Felt very old school.

Deadpool and Wolverine: 6/10 Movie is not for me, find it a bit too silly. That said, there were some fight scenes which I thought were very original and some good jokes (many silly as well). Otherwise same old marvel stuff.

Brooklyn (2015) - 8.5/10. Saoirse Ronan is stunningly beautiful in an early-20th century Irish-to-New York immigration story of a kind that would often be sentimental and boring, but in this case the script is witty and biting, and the film has a genuine heart.

Book was fantastic too.

Borderlands (2024) - 5/10

I only have a passing familiarity with the games (played less than 50 hours in Borderlands 2) so the casting choices didn't phase me that much. I thought the visual presentation was great and the mood was similar to the game. The plot however felt paper thin and the movie as a whole was forgettable as a result.

I think more exposition would have helped and this would be better done as a series rather than a movie. This approach worked for Fallout although I think Fallout has more detailed lore making the transition easier. For Borderlands, the script writers have to add much more to the lore in order to make it work.

Cate Blanchett is still rocking it though. Ages like fine wine.

I Am Mother (2019)

Decent post-apocalyptic scifi that's got some cool set design given what I see was a lowish budget. Story has some cool moments, other parts fall a bit flat but I had no real expectations going in & ended up mostly enjoying it.
