Movie Mini-Review Thread - Part III

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: 9/10.

Finally got to watch it this weekend, and its a masterstroke of animation. Great story which is wonderfully told. The animation is really done with class, it really elevates this movie, and then when you add in the sound track, its a perfect match. Humour added in for good measure is not cheesy, just done well.

If you haven't watched it yet, its worth a watch, its even worth a rewatch or two,

Borderlands: 5/10 - If you remove your brain, especially if you're a fan of the games, it's okay. The choice of the cast is laughable, the storyline is weaksauce and it's an insult to the game, in my opinion.

Inside Out 2: 5/10 - I liked the first move and one could relate to this up to a point, but it ended up being okay. Maybe I just expected too much.

Rebel Ridge (2024)

Some reviews might make you think this is a heavy action movie but once you set that preconception aside it's an enjoyable ride that's more thriller than action. Fizzles out a bit at the end but otherwise a decent watch. Aaron Pierre has some piercing-ass eyes, enjoyed him in the role.

The Straight Story (1999) 8/10. David Lynch’s most accessible and plainly told piece of work, about an elderly Wisconsin man who travels across state to visit his brother. Great soundtrack and portrait of community and kinship.

Raise the Red Lantern (1991) 9.5/10. A new mistress wrestles for power with the other concubines in a Chinese castle.

Is the high rating for lots of bewbs shown, girl on girl action or actually a good movie?

Oh it's a bona fide masterpiece. The sound design and cinematography are impeccable, the story is funny and tense and a scathing indictment of China's misogynistic authoritarian system. It was actually banned in China for a long time after it was released. I saw it once a long time ago but now we rewatched it.

Kinds of Kindness (2024) 6.5/10

New Yorgos Lanthimos film so that means the highest level of absurdist fiction is at play. Emma Stone & Jesse Plemons knocking it out. Film is not for everyone, all out strange. I found Poor Things better.

Cop Land (1997) 6.5/10

Out Of The Furnace (2013) 6/10

Two slow-paced crime-dramas with stacked casts that kind of under-deliver. Enjoyed them (Woody Harrelson in Furnace and Stallone in Cop Land are great) but the casts are a bit wasted.
