Dune 2021. 8/10

Initially I wasn't taken by the cinematography & CGI in the opening 15-20 minutes.
But the story and characters evolve so well in the desert and I'm looking forward to the 2nd instalment.

I never watched the earlier versions, I remember the game - almost think I read the book - I'm too old now to remember :p :D

Titane 8/10. As a fan of David Cronenberg I enjoyed this nod to some of his earlier work but pays the most homage to his controversial Crash.

Got this on my watch list and I see Lamb also dropped yesterday. Hope they're as off the beaten path as they look.

Language Lessons (2021) 6.5/10

Well-told drama with a solid friendship element. Great chemistry by the two leads.

Hypnotic (2021) 5.5/10

A mixed bag thriller with sloppy writing & B-grade performances.

...or maybe Hacksaw Ridge, eh @RanzB ?

What am I missing here?

Dune - 7/10

I agree with all the things praising it, but as someone who's never read the book or watched previous movies/series of it, I felt like there were some things done not great, and some things that let it down.

The score wasn't really for me, the old standby of a woman wailing in any desert/Middle Eastern setting was a bit of a letdown. The choreography wasn't the best, except for the last fight. The voiceovers were a bit hacky in some instances.

And the biggest letdown for me were some of the editing choices.

That being said, I really enjoyed it. It's crazy to think that a 2.5 hour movie seemed too short, but I'm really looking forward to the next one.

Think I may jump into the books soon.

I'd really recommend it. I really liked the movie, but there is so much more depth in the book. A lot of great character development has been (probably necessarily) left out, but it helps fill out a really cool world.

Army of Thieves (2021) 6.5/10

Not sure if we really needed a prequel to Army of the Dead (2021) but this is one is pretty entertaining with a good level of charm & intrigue. Ties up nicely with the OG film.

Lamb (2021) 6/10

Extremely weird slow burner drama. Really hard to make heads or tails on this film. Good setting & casting.
