Moving a prepaid meter

Is it possible to move a prepaid electricity meter? It's currently in the way of where a fridge fits in, so I'd like to move it up a bit.

One needs to break the seals and reseal it afterwards, not sure if any electrician can do that but here in Cape Town any registered electrician can install the units.

Not always nec to disturb the seals, it depends on how it was installed.

I think only the municipal electricity dept can break those seals. Give them a call before you get a sparky in.

Move your meter to a different location​

If you need to move your meter to another area of your home, you must follow the process below:

• Apply for a disconnection / reconnection
• Once your application has been processed, an inspector will be sent out to remove the face off the meter and disconnect it.
• You will need to contact a qualified private electrician to move the meter. The electrician must submit a compliance certificate at the municipal office after completing the work.
• An inspector will come back to your property and check your meter after it has been moved. If the inspector is happy with the work, the electricity will be reconnected.

That sounds like a huge mission to move the meter 20cm.

And it sounds like this process will leave you out of electricity for days.

I'm going to just try ask an electrician if they can do it. There is actually no need to rewire anything that I can see as the new location is simply a few centimetres above the old location.

Its pretty easy, you get an electrician in and they cut the seals and move it. Take photos beforehand of the serial number and intact seals.
The electrician will normally arrange a municipal inspector to come and put new seals on afterwards.
I moved one a few months ago and that was the procedure.

Sent a PM to you, but also asking anyone here, do you know roughly what this sort of thing would cost? What is a reasonable charge for an electrician to move a box like this?

I got a quote but didn't go through with it because other work would have been too costly and involved removing cupboards etc.. The quote was R3,800
