Moving from a razor to wet/dry electric shaver?

Time has come to replace my razor blades. R185 for 4 :wtf::sick:. This is getting ridiculous...Gillette Fusion blades are frickin expense, so are other major brands so no point switching. Sure...I can get those Bic disposables...but I have never used them so no idea how long they last and the job they do.

So Im thinking of going the wet/dry electric shaver route as I think in the long run it will be a better, more cost saving alternative. Sure, I know they dont give as close a shave as the razor, but I can live with that.

Anyone been in this position? Is this a better move to make? Heads costly to replace, and how often do they need replacing?

I hate shaving...

AFAIK You dont have to change the foils as often as you would the blades, but the foils are expensive comapred to blades (and of course the unit is) so probably diff between 6 and 1/2 a dozen

Though I think it takes a bit of getting used to the way it cuts the hair shaver straight and razor at an angle.

Maybe try waxing or veet :D

My brother swears by safety razors, much cheaper than cartridge type razors, I myself use the trimmer side of an electric razor, this is enough for me

I blade shave on a Monday morning then maintain during the week with an electric razor - not foil type. Change blades like times a year, still using mach 3.

Dude..! First, beards FTW.
Second, get your head out of the Gillette/Schick marketing BS and get disposables. Depending on the razors you can get six or eight of them for around sixty South African Rhondts and they work just as well.
Never liked electric razors. IMO, you don't really get a close shave with them, it's always a patchy mess.

Hmm...thats it, gonna try these disposables for a bit so I at least have more to compare to. I tried the beard thing...I just cant, after even 3 days of stubble...it gets frickin itchy :(

I move from shaving with a gilette razor to the Philips Aquatouch. Must say, best saving in a long time for me.

It shaves pretty well, though I do some finishing touches afterwards with a razor, still it saves me a lot of money. You only need to replace the blades once a year, and having it for almost that long, I found it hasn't lost it's effectiveness yet. That said, I only shave every 2nd or 3rd day. With this I now shave in the shower because I am lazy, and then after getting out do the final touches to look good.

I got it for a special from onedayonly.co.za using ebucks, which is why I thought what the heck, lets try it out and see how well it works. Mostly pleased, but I am sure it is not for everyone.

I have a Phillips 3 head electric razor which I thought would save me time and money. It does OK, but it misses patches here and there, it pulls my hairs if they grow out a bit longer. I.e after 3 days or so., and if my skin is even a tiny bit wet, it feels like one of those epilator things. Torture!

In my experience, doing a decent job ends up taking even longer than a razor shave, plus then I have to finish off with a razor anyway. You have to make multiple passes over the same area which really irritates my skin. It is just not worth it i.m.o

I have many razors, but the best by far is the Schick Hydro5. I will never buy another brand.

Bromster that is interesting. I still use shaving cream with my razor in the shower. As for having to go multiple times over the same area, that is what you are supposed to do with an electric razor. It doesnt work the same as manual where you only go over once or twice. In fact instead of going straight over the skin, you should use it in circles, if you do that then it works pretty great. The only reason why I finish off with manual razor afterwards, is the beard below my side hair next to me ears, it's precision is better, and anything I may have missed while in the shower, because without a mirror lets face it, you shave blind.

I am extremely lucky... Never had hard stubble and my beard grows extremely slow.

I shaved with a razor 5 or 6 times and then bought myself a Philips Electric Shaver. One like this... Just older version.

That was 10 years ago. Last week it packed up for the first time in those 10 years. 2 of the motors stopped turning the blades and the side trimmer stopped working.

Not too bad an investment for R699 for 10 years.

I personally prefer Schick Quattro titanium disposables. They are about 60 for 4. They have little wires to stop me from shredding my face as I seem to rush things and bit and they last me about 3 months each razor. I shave about 3 times a week.

Chinese shops sell 10 packs of disposable razors for R30,00. Not all that comfortable to use, but a decent gell helps. Some of them last 3 days, some last 3 weeks.

Yeah. My second favourite. But I find that the hairs are difficult to rinse out, especially the precision trimmer on the back. The hydro5 plastic frame actually pivots up, exposing the blades better. But the lack of precision trimmer can be irritating.

I would never have tried it, but I got a sample Hydro5 in a magazine and have never looked back. Even without the vibration, it works better than the powered 4 blade IMO.

I used a very cheap Philishave for probably about 10 years without ever replacing anything and then just replaced it with a fancier one.

Both completely dry systems though not wet/dry jobbies.

Then I stopped using both and now I use a cheap trimmer without a blade on in the hope of saving my skin for causing a rash every time I shave. Note the rash isn't electric shaver related, I get it even worse with a proper razor blade.

Now I just use the trimmer once a week and my boss hasn't fire me just yet.

What's your current shaving pattern? Do you shave every single day?
