Moving from ADSL to Fibre....mixed speed experiences.

So Ive been chatting to at least 6 friends in Durban North, LaLucia, Glen Anil area, all of whom had 4Meg + ADSL's, and their new fibre lines seem to be disappointing to say the least. All have maintained the contracted speed (IE not upgraded to a faster speed than when on ADSL) but the overall experience is "slow internet".

I have no stats to back this up but it's feedback from friends wondering what all the hype is about.

Do you have similar experiences?

Granted the upload speeds certainly would have changed as fibre is not asynchronous.... but in most cases, not many upload so that benefit may not be noticed.

I'll see if I can get some actual tests done to see what's really going on.

Thanks for that link

Why do you say that? It depends entirely on what technology they are all on.

It's all to do with the ISP and IPS package.

My 10mpbs Openserve Afrihost Premium fibre is nicer (just more responsive, lower latency/ping) to use than my 10mpbs Openserve Afrihost Premium ADSL, and cheaper too!

It doesn't go down when it rains unlike the ADSL, and upload (aka sending e-mails or other uploads and viewing CCTV on tablet at work) is much better now.

Well I assumed all Fibre is similar speed up and down. I know ADSL by its very nature it fast down and slow up . Hence "asynchronous digital subscriber line" rather than just DSL ...... am I wrong?

Not all fibe providers have symmetrical offerings, like Open Serve is Asymmetrical but Metrofribre is symmetrical.
