Moving from iphone to Galaxy S2 - questions

I still have to do homework as this was a sudden decision this afternoon. Just asking here so that you clever people can save me some time. Thanks in advance.

I moved from a an iPhone 3G to Android - and it was pure bliss.

All the apps that I used on my iPhone, I could download again from the Android Market.

Someone saying "the iphone just works", is talking ABSOLUTE RUBBISH!

Say for instance I want to copy music from my pc to my S2 - I simply plug it in the pc and drag and drop the music files/folders I want. Now try that with an iphone. :) Now try and buy music from itunes....

The same goes for documents, videos, movies and pictures.

For contacts, I use Gmail to sync it on the fly. When I got another cheap Android phone as a backup, just login with your gmail account details and all your contacts are on the new phone in less than a minute.

Oh, I use SMSBackup+ to sync my sms between phones.

Got to keep my Yebo Millionaires sms for proof when I win it. :)

Question, is it possible to brick the SGS2 by playing around with rooting and installing/loading/flashing (or what do you call it) a new/custom rom etc?

Root, no. Flash ROM only, not likely if next to impossible.

Flashing the recovery and pulling the battery halfway, that my friend is a guaranteed brick event right there, but its something you a. normally only flash once and b read, read again and check and make sure you are 100% sure its what you want before you hit go.

Okay thanks for all your help so far. I was in two minds but seems like I am making the right choice. Will check in again when I start messing around with the phone. Will have to cancel my weekend for this... :D

In my opinion, a spare battery is a must. I love the fact that I can play with my phone all day and not worry its going to die. Just pop in the battery and bam, double the battery life of an iPhone.

I'm in the same boat :(

I have an iPhone4 and time has come to upgrade.

I'm asking myself must I get the 4S or the S2 ?

Or should I wait for the S3 ?
S2 is old

Sorry for hijacking

Well you will have to wait till probably October to get the S3. There isn't really a phone in SA that beats the pants of the S2 even though it is old now.

If you want to explore android then the S2 is as good as it gets. Maybe you want the Galaxy Nexus that should come out in SA anytime soon now. But it is really similar spec'ed as the S2, depending on your requirements the S2 is better than the Nexus.

If you dont and you are satisfied with the iPhone 4, the 4S will be a more than suitable replacement.

Depends on what your view is in regard to screen size. I would say the Note is curently the best in SA but personally I have my views about the size, many dont but that is their view.

Pity we dont have LTE as there are plenty of better phones than the S2, just not in the 3G category, for example the S2 HD with 1.5 Dual core CPU running at 720 x 1280

As for the S3 question, it looks like it will be announced in April/May so add 2 months for an SA release, well that is again if there will be 3G models at 1st and not LTE exclusive models.

The RAZR MAXX is also a decent phone but not available in SA yet, I was hoping for this one but looks like I might have to get something else as there is no mention of it coming to SA.

Upgraded phone (not contract) from iPhone 4 to galaxy note, and am very pleased with the result.

Got too irritated with the iPhone and big daddy after a mere 6 months. I won't run the iPhone down, it is a very well built device, stable and easy to use. Just that you can do this but not that, blah blah.

The Android devices are a little more work in the beginning, but you get used to that quietly and then is simple and you get amazed at what you can do with it. The app store is just as good as iPhone and the Swype keyboard makes typing as fast if not faster than a computer.

Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk, apple needs to copy again!

Any idea when iPhone 5 will be launched ?

My 1 contract is due for upgrade in April 2012 and my 2nd contract due for upgrade in October 2012

So just weighing all options as there's are some good phones coming in the next few months

I been waiting a month now for a frigging 4S. Fed up waiting for what is essentially a marginal upgrade from the 4. Camera and CPU aside the 4s is actually a bit of a backwards step from the 4. Reduced battery life, echo bug and Siri novelty.

The Note is incredibly tempting at this point in time. As good as the S2 is I can't bring myself to purchase a one year old phone but the mere fact that so many still consider it a worthwhile upgrade is a testimony to its status as legendary...

Most likely coincide with the launch of the S3. There's possibly something worth waiting for.... S3/5....

Well if they keep to their normal tactics its sometime in June/July but you never know what they will do if the S3 looks "too good" they might be pushed to an earlier date.

From the loads of rumors I have heard, the one that made the most sense to me was that the 5 was ready last year already, they just didn't release it at the same time because of LTE models sucking up 2 much juice.

Awesome phone the S2 but exactly, don't want a 1 year old fone which will be replaced by S3 with better specs in a few months time.

Think I'll wait for S3 and iPhone 5

Hope the 5 will be a whole new fone like how 4 was, and not just a facelift Model.

Specwise iPhone 5 and S3 "should" be in same group I'm guessing.

Nah, spec wise the S3 will wipe the floor with the 5.

iPhone 5 is going to have to be significantly better than the 4s to retain market share. New design, 4" retina display, 1gb ram, bare necessities I would say. As well as the 4s is selling it has alienated many Apple users while Samsungs droids continue to make inroads. The S2 has paved the way for future S series successes.

First thing that needs addressing is battery life and if manufacturers cannot hike up the mAh they need to speed up the charge rates. I doubt people would care too much about their poor battery performance if they could charge it from 0-100% in around 30-40 minutes off an AC power supply (even better if that were achievable off usb).

Get the Note and if the size is intimidating get the S2 and root it to get full USB thumb drive access. No way an iPhone can match that freedom no matter what new features Apple comes up with. Apple's problem is not quality and design but excessive control. This coming from a rehabilitated Apple fan.

You can actually wait before you start playing?

I seriously take my hat off to you.

Hehe, I'm at work so have to try and behave. But I might leave early...

Bought a body glove cover at the Vodashop as well. Doesn't look that pretty but very protective. Pressing the buttons on the side throught the thick rubber sucks though.
