Moving to Android from iOS. Device recommendations please?

I've been using iOS for quite a while (iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S) but feel like something different. IOS hasn't really changed much with the recent updates and even though I have always jailbroken and customized my phones as far as possible, I'm starting to get a bit bored with the OS and feel like a change.

Which devices would you guys recommend? I'm getting an insurance payout for my 4S so it would be in that price range. The only android device I've played with a bit is the Galaxy S2. Are they going to be releasing a new one soon?

Any feedback and recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Apparently S3 will be launched soon...

Heard great things about the HTC One X thus far.
Most Euro zones start getting them tomorrow €599. Some early reviews already on YouTube.

Note. Not too big. Just right imo. Well spec'd device that handles everything well. Nothing out there at present will get me to abandon it.

Wow the One X looks and sounds awesome. Would one be able to root it?

Sony Xperia S. Picking mine up on Thursday.

Best smartphone until the S3 comes out.

I'd wait for the one X or the S3. The S2 is still pretty much top of the range but it's already about a year old. Personally I'm waiting for the One X as an upgrade from my desire.

In terms of rooting HTC use to lock down their phones a lot. Rooting the desire is a bit of a process but since then they've switched to having unlocked bootloaders so it's easy peasy. S2 is also dead easy to root so S3 probably the same.

Really liking the One x from the reviews I've seen on YouTube. Do you think it would be worth purchasing overseas and getting it sent down? Do you know if there has been an SA launch date announced?

In SA its either

Out Now:
SGS2 <-- Kinda old now but still a dam good phone
RAZR <-- Great phone with kevlar case and water resistant.
Nexus <-- Google Phone and specs is not the best but at least you know it will get updates
NOTE <-- Huge as phone for Elephants, don't believe me see the note commercial :)

Waiting for:
SGS3 <-- Specs Unknown
HTC One x <-- one spec monster of a phone
Sony Xperia S <-- great all rounder and I like the looks

I don't know why we never get the upgrades or inbetween models like the SGS2 HD or HTC Sensation SE..... oh well guess we will have to make do with what comes to shore.

Indeed MIUI ftw... I do miss Sense a bit though. Waiting to see what MIUI do with ICS!

How on earth can you put the old tech in a Sony Xperia S next to the quad core HTC one X? (never mind the as yet unannounced SG S3) WTF

HTC One X review on The Verge:

Here's the full article: http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/2/2919202/htc-one-x-review

This looks like a really nice phone.

On the other hand, if you're looking for something that's on the market right now, I can really recommend the Galaxy Nexus. Apart from the annoying 3G image bug (which I believe to be a Vodacom problem, not a Samsung or Google problem), this is easily the best smartphone I have ever used. It beats the RAZR in terms of specs, and is broadly equivalent to the Xperia S or SGS2. Compared to the SGS2, it has a less powerful GPU but a vastly improved screen. Since the display affects every single thing you do on the device, I'm willing to make the tradeoff - especially when you consider that the Nexus should receive updates faster than other devices, and will also be the only device (at least until the next Nexus comes out a year from now) that is not saddled with a manufacturer skin.

Because as he said its a phone not yet released. Plus, being an iPhone user, i am sure the OP wants something that looks good, in which case the Xperia S is way more of a looker than the HTC. :).

I agree that the Sony looks awesome.. But it is too similar to the iPhone 4/4S shape for me. I found the iPhone 4/4S pretty average to hold. The edges are too "sharp" and holding it after a few drinks can became hazardous:)
