Looking to go through an agency like away2explore or any of the others that exist.

Essentially I'll be looking to do fitness related work, however bartending/waitoring is also welcome.

Hourly wages will be between 7-10 pounds per hour depending on what you end up doing and you have to pay for your own food/housing so I do wonder if I will even be making more than I would here.

Anyone done it before? What is UK life like?

Website is so slow today, can't edit my post.

My goal is to hopefully save up some money, come back and do something with it.

Unless you have precisely zero life there, and very cheap accommodation, you'll come home with zip.

Also, on what basis do you expect to be allowed to work there?

Well I've just moved to Germany, and let me just say if it wasn't for the awesome money and the easier lifestyle I have here, i'd be back in SA, If SA had this economy, we'd be a number 1 nation, it's sad actually.

You had better check your facts. As far as I know, working holiday Visa's are not available anymore. So unless you are a UK citizen with a UK passport, you are kinda screwed. At least for the kind of work you are talking about because the only visa that is still around is the Skilled working Visa, and you certainly don't seem to qualify for that.

Gone are the days of students having holidays over here and thinking that they can save their money.

What are you doing in Germany as a profession?

Unfortunately the South African government in one of their cutting of their nose to spite their face moments refused to make a reciprocal agreement with the UK.

I used a legal firm based in London. Breytenbachs(yes they are mostly South Africans). They are good. Will give a consultation (I can't remember if I paid for that. I think it was waived once they agreed to process our application). They will tell you straight out if you have no chance and won't waste your time any further. They guarentee the visa once they submit. Note that I said "once they submit it. Working visa are not impossible to get if you have a university degree. It's just that there is now a limit on the number they issue. Without a uni degree it's pretty much closed unless you can get an ancestral visa.

As for do I like it here. Yes I do. I'm staying. Got perm residence in Jan. However, everyone is different. Because I like it doesn't mean others will. If you feel like you have to move into an area where there are South Africans then you probably shouldn't leave SA :) if you aren't prepared to live like a Brit, don't immigrate to Britain. The Brits are actually a nice bunch. They aren't the same as the Brits who you met that live in SA. In fact you can probably say the same about most countries.

Pretty sure that to join a non commonwealth regiment you have to have lived in the UK for 4 years before your eligible, even with a British passport.
