Like with War.. recession makes things hard. UK and most of Europe(heck most of the world these days) are having problems so work for populous hence work Visas are under tough scrutiny particularly un- & even semi-skilled Visas.

I should use ancestral visa but meh.. uk not exactly where i'd go.

Whatever you do avoid expatriates who spend their time whining about South Africa. Unless that's what you want to spend your time doing too.

The Brits are actually a nice bunch. They aren't the same as the Brits who you met that live in SA.
The ones I know are essentially the same.

For the UK having to allow EU citizens in was a major change. That's where a big chunk of the jobs go now.

Argh...

Back to job hunting... Wish I had the money to study for a degree or bachelors.

Unisa is likely your cheapest option. Perhaps you can afford that?

Normal Varsity is generally cheaper than unisa from what I've seen!

Try get a bursary for what ever you are interested in!

I know there a loads of bursaries for accounting and some of the business fields, teaching, law, engineering. Obviously you would have to meet requirements though.. Otherwise try find a part time job. I know a lot of my mates had to work while studying to pay for uni!

Huh? Unisa is by far the cheapest according to the various university websites I checked: half UKZN and nearly a quarter of UCTs fees.

I used an agent in Pretoria when I went over in 2006. R3,000, organised my Visa and a job in two weeks. They even gave me 3 jobs to choose from.

I haven't been there since 2007, but if I had the choice I'd be back in Yorkshire in a jiffy. Has its bad sides too, not all rosy. The outskirts of Manchester (and all major industrial cities to be honest) reminded me of Rosettenville; overgrown and rundown and there was a spate of gun killings towards the end of 2006 in Birmingham and Manchester if I recall. Public transport was fantastic for me.

The people are fine, just as long as you don't bitch about their country, only they can do that. I enjoyed my time over there while some other idiot constantly bitched and moaned and ostaicised himself. Came over with a chip on his shoulder over the Anglo-Boer War, because you know, was fresh in his memory.

The UK economy is starting to boom now. By all accounts growth will outstrip that of the US, EU and Japan.

Employment is picking up.

A lot of employers are already starting to complain to the govt that the immigration restrictions are hurting them.

Once the unemployment drops to very low levels the immigration rules will be relaxed again. However, it might take at least 2 or 3 years for this to become politically acceptable.

Yes I'm generalising :)
Good - I thought I was going to have to pay a visit next week when I'm on my way to the Kent coast… *cracks knuckles*

I know a few who have. They used agencies in the foreign countries though. Most I know either applied direct or were internally recommended. As a piece of advice, the larger companies are usually far more open to the prospect of hiring visa workers, since they usually have dedicated staff to deal with the red tape.

My current job, and partly my previous one too (both in the USA) came from being discovered due to a prominent online profile (projects, source code, cv, papers, etc.). I highly recommend building up a linkedin profile and personal site if you are skilled, and stating that you would like to work in country X and Y in your summary (assuming you're not already working of course - otherwise this could be awkward :) ).

Did the research about it. Apparently life there sucks. They have a terrible education system and classrooms with 50+ students.

It's far from a guarantee, but if you want to go to the USA, there is the "green card lottery". It's free to enter every year, and you have 2x the chances if you are married. The applicants are pooled in separate groups of countries (so you're not competing with large populations like China or India, and countries which were previously dominant in the lottery quota are usually disqualififed for the next year), and do require some minimal qualifications (matric, some yeras of work experience). It could take years, but I know quite a few people who got in this way.

That USA lottery is quite cool, do you have a legit website for that?

Back on topic: Any particular reason you want to go solely to the UK? It really is one of the most difficult countries to get into now with the immigration laws unless you posses something they really really want.

Just remembered, these guys sent me an email a few days ago http://www.ydp.co.za/
I was looking at courses through them a while back but they had nothing for me.
