Hi,

This is a strange problem. I have a Netgear DG834G router, and when I log onto MSN Messenger, I can use the tex-chat part of MSN Messenger and I can use the webcam part of MSN Messenger, but I cannot seem to use the voice conversation part of MSN.
Is this related to :-
- TELKOM (dunno if this is possible ?)
- security settings on my PC
- security settings on my router

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey there.

What exactly happens? Does it bomb out giving an error message or can you hear the other person? Maybe a microphone setting someplace? did you do all the audio and video tests etc,???

Cheers

Hi All!
I have the same modem-router and MSN Messenger does not work for voice conversation. I can use text chat but not voice. When I try to Start Talking there is always a messege "Connecting to xxx's computer" and after that "Problem with network or other computer" or something similar. Everything OK with network and other computer. I tried to use old adsl modem with router, everything was fine.

I put the latest firmware, it does not help. I tried to make port forwarding - no success. Netgear DG834G support uPnP, so it should work without port forwarding. The only idea I could get is from MS web site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826284&Product=WinMsgr

SYMPTOMS
If your computer is behind a network address translation (NAT) device such as a router or an Internet Connection Sharing computer that uses the UPnP service, and the static port range on your computer is set to use only one Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) port, you cannot log on to a server (such as a Microsoft Live Communications Server server) by using a real-time communications client (such as Microsoft Windows Messenger).
CAUSE
This issue occurs because two SIP ports are required when your computer is behind a UPnP certified NAT device.

SIP is a signaling protocol that is used to establish real-time communications sessions. To permit communication (sending and receiving data) between two computers, a port has to be opened on each computer. One of these ports is reserved for SIP traffic.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, configure the computer that is operating behind the NAT device to grant a minimum of two SIP ports for signaling.

I don't understand a lot from that. Any ideas how to fix it?

Many thanks

Howdy

If you are behind a NAT router or firewall, you cannot have an msn voice conversation. It's a stupid protocol that requires a direct peer-to-peer connection to your pc.

Is anyone having problems logging into MSN messenger lately? I have been unable to login for about two weeks. SAIX blocking the port?

If you use NAT (also known as Internet Connection Sharing) to access the Internet you will have to setup a proxy to use the MSN Messenger voice service...[8D]

I have exactly the same problem - I am not using ICS but NAT is enabled on the router. I am sure however I read on Microsofts site that it can work with NAT provided uPnP is enabled. The latest firmware even says they have fixed MSN issues - prehaps you could expand on the proxy setup?

Thanx Tim
