Has anyone managed to get audio convesations and MSN messenger working as yet? Telkom told me today that the reason why it isnt working behind their (Marconi) nat router is because I am on their shaped package and that if I move to the unshaped package all will work well. Is this true or dont the Marconi's support uPNP? Is this just a money making scheme?

YUp, use it all the time. If you have a firewall installed then this is most likely your problemas messenger uses a dynamic port setup which makes it impossible for firewalls other than XP's built in one (if its on the same machine that's doing the connection).

Do not go to Telkom with a query about Voice Over IP. It's a bit like going to Multichoice complaing about your cracked/hacked DSTV simcard not working properly. It is illegal in South Africa and they will not help you! This technology is what I concider vital to development, which is why I recommend people use it without missing any sleep at all, but please know that Telkom will tell you all sorts of stories about why it is not working. MSN Messenger's voice capability doesn't work through a firewall.

Definitions of Voice Over IP (VoIP) on the Web:

A voice message delivered using the Internet Protocol. It is a term used in IP telephony for a set of facilities for managing the delivery of voice information using the Internet Protocol. In general, this means sending voice information in digital form in discrete packets rather than in the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

an application that encodes and digitizes a voice signal, converts the signal to data packets, and transports the packets over a data network running Internet protocol (IP).
www.intel.com/network/csp/solutions/contact_cntr/6671web.htm

A collection of hardware and software that enables the use of the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls.

Voice transport over IP networks, such as the Internet. This could allow your company to make enormous savings on telecomms costs by sending voice traffic anywhere around the world via your internet connection.
www.ggrcomms.com/techglos.html

The practice of using an Internet connection to pass voice data using IP instead of using the standard public switched telephone network. This allows a remote worker, for instance, to function as if directly connected to a PBX even while at home or in a remote office. In bypassing the public network, it also avoids standard long distance charges, as the only connection is through an ISP. VoIP is being used more and more to keep corporate telephone costs down.
www.tecksel.com.au/glossary/Default.asp

A rapidly emerging technology that allows transmission of phone calls (two-way audio) over the Internet. Support for this technology can be found in some modems and broadband routers. Also known as IP telephony.
www.source.uk.com/glossary_V.htm

Audio that is transferred over the Internet. IP is the acronym for Internet protocol.
support.conveysystems.com/manual/dictionary.htm

(VoIP) -- A term used in IP telephony which generally means sending voice information in digital form in discrete packets rather than in the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). A major advantage of VoIP and Internet telephony is that it avoids the tolls charged by ordinary telephone service.

And yes, it is illegal.

so listening to internet radio is illegal in za ?
I agree to a certain extent with your quotes but defining MSN voice chat as a voip service seems to be too broad.
from : http://www.fcc.gov/voip/

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"> What is VoIP/Internet Voice?
VoIP allows you to make telephone calls using a computer network, over a data network like the Internet. VoIP converts the voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the internet then converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number. When placing a VoIP call using a phone with an adapter, you'll hear a dial tone and dial just as you always have. VoIP may also allow you to make a call directly from a computer using a conventional telephone or a microphone. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

MSN is and end to end service and cannot be routed to the PSTN -- a primary function of specific voip services.

strange how these topics come up at the right times, just this week, I was looking for a solution to allow messenger voice/file transfers from PC's connected to the internet with NAT

I'm looking for a proxy server / Connection sharing facility that has uPNP 4 windows , any ideas, has anybody tried winroute pro 6, I haven't tried it yet, but it seems to have uPnP functionality, and a builtin firewall, that opens reqd ports when initiated, maybe this will help that troubleshooting TIP of microsofts, open ports 5000-65535
