Sports minister Nathi Mthethwa has asked SA Rugby to make a pronouncement on the actions of eight South African players who refused to kneel in support of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement ahead of a match that was played in England at the weekend.

The eight South Africans were part of eleven players from the Manchester-based club who elected to remain standing during the pre-match activity ahead of an English Premiership match between Harlequins and Sale Sharks.

Those who did not kneel are Springbok World Cup winners Faf de Klerk and Lood de Jager‚ twins Jean-Luc and Daniel du Preez‚ their older brother Robert‚ Akker van der Merwe‚ Coenie Oosthuizen and club captain Jono Ross.

“The applause went on—six, seven, eight minutes! They were done for! Their goose was cooked! They couldn’t stop now till they collapsed with heart attacks! At the rear of the hall, which was crowded, they could of course cheat a bit, clap less frequently, less vigorously, not so eagerly…Nine minutes! Ten!…Insanity! To the last man! With make-believe enthusiasm on their faces, looking at each other with faint hope, the district leaders were just going to go on and on applauding till they fell where they stood, till they were carried out of the hall on stretchers.”

At last, after eleven minutes of non-stop clapping, the director of a paper factory finally decided enough was enough. He stopped clapping and sat down—a miracle!
“To a man, everyone else stopped dead and sat down,” Solzhenitsyn says.

That same night, the director of the paper factory was arrested and sent to prison for ten years. Authorities came up with some official reason for his sentence, but during his interrogation, he was told: “Don’t ever be the first to stop applauding!”

Don't worry everyone, you just have to clap for your new commie overlords elsewise you will be dealt with.

That would be illegal. Is Mthethwa an idiot?

It does not look like he is saying anything out of the ordinary and it does look like he is aware of his limitations in interfering. The article is slightly clickbaity, especially the heading.

“We do not want to jump the gun on the specific matter of the South African players in England who didn’t kneel in support of the BLM movement but we did say we want to understand what’s happening‚ and what is the position of SA Rugby in this whole thing‚” said Mthethwa.

Context:

Premiership Rugby were criticised earlier in the week for not taking a lead in deciding the league’s anti-racism position, which saw Exeter Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter criticise officials for “hanging the players out to dry”.

In statements issued earlier in the week, Sale Sharks said: “Sale Sharks stand together in the face of all discrimination. To demonstrate this, the entire Sale Sharks matchday squad will be wearing ‘Rugby Against Racism’ t-shirts when the team run out this weekend at the Twickenham Stoop.”

Harlequins said: “Will be supporting Black Lives Matter with the squad taking a knee.”

But Baxter was scathing of allowing each club to decide a different message.

"Just dropping it on clubs and saying, 'there you go, do what you like' is like hanging some players out to dry," Baxter said.

1. None of the teams were instrucetd to do anything, they individually decided on what they were going to do.
2. The Sale Sharks agreed to wear the shirt, not kneel. Those that knelt would've done so of their own choice.
3. Manu Tuilagi, a man of colour, never knelt so how how does the esteemed minister come to racism?

Still he really should stay out of people's personal choices. Do they have a position (lol) that everyone representing the country needs to take a knee? SA Rugby can't force their players to support some or other arbitrary cause. I know they do have positions on what you can or can't do in terms of sponsors but this is different like forcing a religion on a person just because they play for your team. And that only being told after you join the team.

Shyte if you dont believe in the movement then whats the issue, not everyone support or think its a worthy cause, but now you will have to answer for what you did not do.

Soon they will make it illegal to not support the ANC.

After all, their Communist friends in China have a Dictator for life where criticism of the party is not allowed. Russia is not communist anymore, but they also have a Dictator for life and it is dangerous to criticise the party there.
