Has anyone else been experiencing a problem in receiving the OTA settings sms's via USSD or MTN's website?

I tried again this morning with no luck.

Via USSD, no sms is returned other than a flash sms saying my MTN MMS account has been updated successfully. (d1)

On the website, it still says the service is currently unavailable. In fact, trying to update your phone details on the site is giving problems also!

Hi DD,

I should mention that I'm currently roaming in the Netherlands. I was able to get OTA settings sent to me via Sony Ericsson's support site.

It then suggests that OTA settings sent by MTN can only be received if you're in their home network?

The Netherlands is always fantastic. They haven't had any rain to speak of in 40 days so its been sunny and hot, very unusual for these parts..

For those who are interested, NL currently has 4 3G networks. My preference is T-Mobile. I have been able to video call, send and receive mms's and surf the net with T-Mobile. The other networks dont support anything more than a voice call and sms while roaming with MTN.

Hi
If you roaming the USSD request for settings from MTN SA is not going to work unfortunately. If you need any setups for MTN, Ill be happy to post the manual setup here for you :D

Hi DD,

As mentioned, I was able to receive OTA settings for MTN via Sony Ericsson's phone setup page. I received OTA settings for both MMS and GPRS. The reason why I needed to receive the settings again was because I had done a software upgrade on my phone while I was here and the settings were wiped off.

It's disappointing that MTN does not send out settings to those subscribers who are roaming internationally. Until I found other alternatives through SE, I was not able to use the net or send MMS's from here for the last couple of days.

Surely the revenue opportunity for MTN with subscribers using more services while roaming outweighs the reasons to not send OTA's outside the home network?

Hi I do understand the frustration, but I think I need to explain its not that we dont want to, due to costs or anything like that but rather because it is quite difficult to.

Let me explain why it worked from the sony site and not via MTN.

Firstly with MTN OTA, the service is quite intelligent in that the moment the request is sent via USSD or the site, it queries your IMEI from one of our servers. It then takes the first few digits of your IMEI called the TAC (TAC refers to a specific model and manufacturer, meaning that all Sony Ericsson 990; will start with for e.g. 12345) and matches the TAC to a list of TAC's that we have. It is then possible to identify the handset. And when the handset is identified, the relevant provisionings are done e.g. enabling GPRS or MMS as per the handset that was identified. In the same manner the relevant OTA file specific to your handset is sent to you. If you are roaming it makes it very difficult for the IMEI to be queried thats why OTA fails via MTN.

Remember when you used the Sony site, you specified the handset and which settings you wanted. So no IMEI/TAC Query was done. Thats why you got the settings successfully.

Hope this clears things up

DD
