I have a bit of a problem and wondered if anyone of you guys could help me by telling me what I can do.

The other day I purched a "One day Unlimited Internet" bundle whict is charged @ R50. I downloaded 5GB of data, which as far as I can tell was well within any "FUPollicy" and recieved a bill of R11000, jip you read it correctly, R11k .

I did find that there is a fair use policy which will drop your speed to 128Kbps if you exceed 150MB before the 24hr timeline, although my speed didn't .

As far as I can tell it is not my fault they didn't throttel me, in any case, I didn't even know there was such a policy till today.

Any sugesstions or sould I go directly to the papers?

Edit:
Full disclosure:

Hi Guys,

I told you I would get back to you, so this is it;

Thing is, this actually didn't happen to me, but to my very best friend. I had to quickly jump in to get input from you guys and sent him the link to the forum so that he could see what to do before he went to them.

Unfortunately, they bullied/threatened him into paying. But it's fine, their forgiven, it's between them and Our Heavenly Father.

Thanx for everyone who tried to help, I really appreciate it guys.

I see as I read through the thread that this was not the last time it happened either and that others have had success through your contributions on this thread, so not all was lost though.

Thanx Again

Do you have proof that the R50 bundle was loaded in the first place?

It's clear that somehow or the other your Unlimited Bundle was not activated - so you are being billed at OOB rates of R2 per MB.

MTN will disclaim any responsibility, they will say that you did something wrong, and that you have to pay.

If you don't pay they will blacklist you.

The newspapers get so much of this that they are not really interested, but you can always try.

PEOPLE, DON'T TRY THESE THINGS ON A CONTRACT - IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG YOU ARE SCREWED !!!!

I personally only use prepaid data nowadays - mainly Cell C at the moment.

Afaik, you buy the bundle, then dial another number *162*...# to activate the bundle. You then get an sms to say its been activated and you have 24hrs to back-up the interwebs. Hope you did all of this :erm:

1024 MB x 5 = 5120 MB @ R2 = R10240 + 14%vat = R11673.60

so yeah sadly it can cost R11k...

OP, can you prove you loaded the bundle? A confirmation sms should do.

Edit: remember the R2/MB is ex-vat.

there is no way in hell 5gb can cost 11k!

Now why would you think that ?

At R2 per MB (5 * 1024), and he may have been a bit over 5GB, and there you go. Standard OOB rates.

I'm back, yea it was like 5.5GB or something. But how was I supposed to know I had to "Activate" the dam thing. With vodacom it's activated once the transaction is processed!?

They did send me a sms saying that I had purchased it, so I don't know what the problem is. Another family member went to talk to them but they just blamed it on the amount, as if I "misused" the service!?

How much can 5 to 5.5GB realy cost them, Im prepared to pay @ double cellc tariffs even, but this is pathetic!?

I must add that I bought it with loyalty points, but how could that have made a difference anyway?

This is the only valid argument you have, stick to it, don't diffuse the argument with other issues.

You received an SMS that for all intents and purposes let you know that the product was now working, so you made use of the product, only to later discover that you were purposefully mislead, and that a further step of "activating" is required, something that you were completely unaware of.

Just stick to those base points and begin smacking the snot out of them via media exposure, consider opening a F*C*YOUMTN.co.za website to detail the facts and their underhanded thieving techniques.
