I hope the CPA will kill this kind of behaviour from the operators.

As I have stated this is morally bankrupt behaviour from MTN. Yes they are well within their rights from a legal framework, but they don't do nearly enough to educate people about this.

The question becomes when do you cut the convenience of a contract. between the CPA and NCA there should be a set allowable range before it is deemed gouging on the operators part.

and a user would be allowed the option to set the allowable range to be unlimited. and that user can't complain about this. but the default would not be unlimited. an operator would submit to ICASA what the average spend over the post-paid amount is. and then some percentage added to that.

after all when you have a contract, one of the things you sign up for is that you will pay for usage past your bundle. but you also want the usage past your bundle to have a control of some sort.

well guys it's these sort of things that un-attentive consumers are screwed with...
Hopefully the consumer protection act which is effective from March 31 st will help with all these sort of things.

I'm on contract as well, also bought it with my points, luckily I can't access the Internet if I don't have airtime, so I had to activate it first. I downloaded like 300MB, and was worried why I wasn't throttled, ended up doing 4GB. Yes, it expired after 24hrs.

Another victim.... BASTARDS

I am another victim of this behaviour. This is what happened and my mail to MTN.

I dialed *141*9# from MTN cellphone number 071xxxxxxx just after 8PM to purchase a data bundle using my loyalty points. When I went to data bundles I saw there was a 24 hour option. I chose it. At 8:21PM I received an SMS from 555 stating the following: “You have purchased 24 Hour data bundle using 1700 Loyalty points. Your available Points balance is 4790 points”. This is the only sms that I received from MTN that evening I and I am sure your system can verify that.

I then took my sim card out of my phone and put it in my 3G dongle. I then started my downloads and went to bed knowing that I have a 24 hour unlimited data bundle. The next morning I noticed that it had downloaded 5Gb using the sim card. I took the SIM card out of my dongle and put it in the phone. Just to check that everything was fine I dialed 808 to verify that I hadn’t been charged for the transfer. Imagine my surprise when I heard my unbilled balance is in excess of R10,000! At approximately 9:06am Saturday morning (13 hours after the 555 sms) I received an sms from 141 stating that “You’ve successfully loaded a MTN Broadband Unlimited 1 Day bolt on data bundle. Please activate before 20110524 by dialing *141*6*5*3#”

I have purchased data bundles before using the loyalty program and never had to activate the bundle. MTN does not state that this is necessary in the correspondence I received from them. How can I be billed R10,000 if I did not carry any knowledge of this fact? The message sent to me should have clearly stated this. I followed the 141 loyalty program instructions exactly. Nowhere on the *141*9# (my only means of accessing the MTN Loyalty Points) menu is there option to activate the bundle if you did not know the shortcut listed above. I check the MTN Loyalty program support page (http://www.mtn.co.za/Support/Legal/Pages/MTNLoyaltyProgramme.aspx) that also makes no mention whatsoever of the need to activate the bundle. How can I be to blame for this? If I had received the message from 141 at the same time OR was given instructions in the 555 SMS I would definitely have followed instructions. "

I have not yet received feedback. Will keep you guys posted.

1.) NCA - irresponsible lending.
2.) CPA - might be able to help.

hmmm,

I think they should allocate everyone a max credit balance of R2500 unless you ask for more. That can still be eina but is at least on a 1/4 of the R10k

Putting it into perspective : with R11000 you can buy three 5Gb CellC speedsticks, two CellC 2Gb speedsticks and a KFC barrel with all the trimmings.

Bleh.

That's 19Gb per month you can burn.

THANK GOD. I was just phoned by MTN and told that the entire R10,000 data bill been cancelled from my account due to the fact that the activation sms only came through the next morning and thanks to the lovely new CPA. Now I can sleep again. I luckily never told my boss about my hectic bill otherwise I would probably have been fired or at best lost the company cellphone privilege. phew. Ok now lets go download! LOL

Moral of the story to use this service on a prepaid simcard - that way you can sleep better known you paid R50 for the service and not worry about receiving an account of R30 grand if left on for 24hours
