Mastercards for MTN's mobile money platform

Mastercard and MTN Group Fintech have signed an agreement to provide all MTN MoMo customers with payment cards.

In a joint statement on Thursday, the companies said a virtual and physical Mastercard companion card would be added to every MoMo wallet, allowing users access to over 100 million acceptance locations globally.

and let the Stealing commence!!!

seeing how hard and how long I had to wait recently to do a sim swap within MTN
when my phone got stolen recently, I can only imagine this going sideways in a hurry.

My daughter lost her phone last month, walked into Telkom: required proof of residence and ID document. Scanned her thumb and that was it. Next up Vodacom, asked the same documents and then the dreaded "last 5 numbers dialled in the last two months."

She gave them 4 and they didn't want to budge, the fifth number was dialled a long time ago, she now uses whatsapp on that particular number.

I eventually went to Vodacom and reasoned with them, fortunately, the lady was receptive and sorted the mess.

I feel these networks should do it like Telkom, less hassles, stress and complications.

you had it easy! phone stolen, number blocked, blacklisted, all the jazz,
now to do a sim swap call 135, 100 times, get pushed from pillar to post, told to wait 24 hours to no action, go to 3 different MTN shops, including one of ONLY 3 in the entire WC that does SIM swaps, wait even longer for things to move, get emails that do nothing.

and after about a week of going nuts, get a sim swap back to my old number, but I think the entire thing is a recipe for fraudsters to do whatever they like when your phone and Bank account are the same thing.

so I dont know, not that happy to hear Virtual cards and physical cards being issued by a Cellphone provider are going to happen.

Especially MTN, they are known for bank fraud. I don't know how many cases involving MTN have occurred in recent times. I don't trust them when it comes to banking, hence my main number is on Vodacom. I use MTN as a secondary line.
