Mtn Calldesk Bunch Of Idiots

So I get a new MTN pre-paid sim, put it in my phone and it won't connect on the myMTN and internet APN's.

Call the call desk, listen to the most distorted music I've ever heard, speech is fine. After holding on for how long, get the standard, nauseating 'yellow' and promptly get cut off.

Call back, eventually (after listening to the same distorted music) speak to Sizwe Ngobo. Ask him if the sim is enabled for data and what the APN settings should be. He does not understand the question. Eventually, after reading me all his standard scripts, I insist I need to speak to someone with a brain cell who understand terms like 'internet', 'VPN' and 'data'. These words are just to big for them. Then the clincher.....

I'm not allowed to call for data support from the same number I'm requesting support on. I must put the phone down and call from another number. He's not allowed to transfer me....bloody hell!

After throwing my toys, I speak to his supervisor, Bryan, who tells me the same story. I'm not allowed to speak to the data help desk, but in my case he'll mail them to ask if I can talk to them.....

So, as I'm typing this, I'm om hold waiting for them to answer Bryan's mail. Hopefully they read their mail every now and then and decide my question is important enough to warrant their important time.

ALL I WANT IS A SIMPLE ANSWER. WHY MUST I BEG MTN TO HELP ME SPEND MONEY WITH THEM????????????

Where ever have you heard of this absurdity that you must mail someone to ask if you can call them?

Still holding....

Yea i found that numerous times with my prepaid sims .

The trick is NOT to ask "please data enable my sim", instead ask "please send me the WAP settings" . [this action itself seem to enable your sim. Easier to just do it via the menu prompts though ] .

So far the word "WAP" triggers alot of lightbulbs on the helpdesk person, words like "data","3G" and "GPRS" ...forget it. Just say you want to WAP.....

Hi
That is correct, requesting for WAP/MMS Setttings enables packet data on the sim automatically.

Ok, will try that. But the person should understand the question and even if the answer is to send the settings to activate the sim they should know that.

But more importantly, what is this cr@p that you're not allowed to call from the number you're having problems with?

BTW, after holding on for ever, they must have decided my call is worthy of their attention (from Bryan's mail, I guess), so Wesley spoke to me. Not much help, but he promised to get someone to call me back. Will see.

After this fiasco, I decided to try a Cell-C sim. Again I could not connect but this time their call desk recons the WHOLE Cell-C GPRS network is down....crazy...

So back to my trusty VC sim.....

Hi
BTW of of curiousity, what number did you dial?
Regards
DD

The one that's printed in the booklet that came with the sim, I assume it's the normal call desk. There is no data-specific number in the booklet.

Never heard back from them. Surprise, surprise.....

diabolus' advice worked though.
