So my daughters contract came up for renewal in Dec but because her phone is fine we let it run.

Now she is working etc she has offered to pay for her own cell phone costs.

I go into the MTN store on 30 March to give the 30 days notice of cancellation. A bit of paper work checking ID etc and the guy says ok fine that's it. I ask don't I get a receipt or something he says no so I get a copy of the cancellation form after insisting on it.

Today I go into the same store to get her a prepaid sim and inquire about this cancellation. They say there's nothing on record? I say I have proof but it's at home so I'll send it. Get home scanner not working so I get in the car go back and they take a copy.

My expectancy is a long hard fight to get a refund because I take it the mag tape is already presented and I have my phone on the same debit or I could just stop the debit.

You shouldn't need to get a prepaid SIM, the contract SIM should become prepaid and keep the same number.

But yeah, they ignored my father's cancellation request too. Only found out several months later when they were trying to get money. Fortunately we still had the reference number from 808 for the cancellation.

Well as thought the debit included my daughter's "cancelled" contract.

Anyone know where I can get a 20x3mtr banner printed urgently?

Same problem with 2x 2GB data sims.

I emailed a cancellation request for both lines on 25/03. I received confirmation with a reference number saying they would be cancelled on 30/04.

Tried both sims on 1/05 and they are still active and a debit order went through for both. They don't even respond on Twitter so I will have to go into a store tomorrow and get these sim's killed once and for all - I will insist on an immediate switch to prepaid.

ask mtn to convert the sim to prepaid. usually effective immediately, or at least within a few hours.

As she wants a new number, store the old contract one in a drawer for a bit.

this can be done via calling 808, if I remember correctly.

This happened to me with Telkom Mobile.

I now have no contracts with them, and a substantial amount in 'credit' that they won't refund and I don't plan on ever using.

I went to an MTN store just now, stood in a 15min queue. Finally get assisted and get told because our lines are with MTN business, she can only log the query.

So she did that and now I wait some more. This has destroyed any faith in MTN contracts.......

(Sorry to OP for hijacking)

After 45mins on hold with 809 (Business version of 808), it has been established that the cancellation was cancelled so that is why the lines are still active. No further explanation and the call centre agent has to send an email to the person who cancelled it. I must just wait...

I managed to find the direct 011 number for MTN Business, got the email address of the actual lady who emailed me proof of the cancellation notice and I have emailed her. I now wait for feedback.

This is dodgy as heck - how can cancelling contracts which are >24 months be such a nightmare???

UPDATE

My 2 lines were finally killed. They put the blame on me saying because I had asked for the lines to be converted to prepaid, the cancellation was cancelled. What a crock!

ONLY when I said to the lady on the phone "I am not looking for a refund on the last debit order" did she suddenly say she can kill the lines immediately - it was almost like they wanted to stall to prevent me from trying to get the last debit order reversed....

I'll gladly write off the R240 and lost data just to be done with this matter. Definitely school fee's....

after about 28 mins on hold i finally got through on 808, was told that there was a backlog and that it will be cancelled and converted today BUT that i was also liable for whatever airtime/data was used from last week so now i can expect a huge bill.
WTF mtn - had this contract for about 10 years and this is the way the treat me :( will port or cancel this number soon if prepaid is just as bad on mtn.
