MTN cannot count!

I've used both Vodacom's and MTN's 1Gb Pre-paid bundles and for some reason MTN's always seem to run out a bit sooner than Vodacom's.

Well, now I know why, MTN's can't count!

About an hour ago I did a *141# balance query, which came back with 292Mb remaining. I connected and started downloading a few things, I'm using ginngs dashboard application and both his program and windows network counter agreed I'd downloaded about 63Mb of data.

Now I do another *141# balance enquiry, and there's only 182Mb remaining! They've stolen 47Mb of data from me!! I understand they pre-allocate the data sometimes and it might come back later, but I'm going to check tomorrow and if it's not back then I'm going to want an explanation, you cannot just steal data like that!

Today, I've checked again still 182MB!

So where has my 47Mb gone?

Someone from MTN please explain...

MTN are being quite silent on this matter. Is there a problem with their system??

Why not try contacting their customer support?

So they can tell me that it's all my fault and I must have a 'virus' that's 'stealing' my data? Not again, Thanks!

It's bad enough that they're stealing my money, but it seem that none of that stolen money goes to pay for a decent service department that's staffed with people who have actual knowledge of their products, as opposed to the ability to read a script off the screen.

Is it Possible MTN could be collecting data about their subscribers? and we're Paying for it?

I've seen this data Transfer happen as well. But did some investigating. If you're in Command Prompt, if you type this string:
"netstat -e" you will get total data transferred. With MTN i saw 2KB of data being sent roughly every 2-3 seconds. So, if left overnight my pc would have downloaded around15-40 mBytes. And this doesn't get noted on windows counter

Very curious, but no Mtn rep would coment on this i know.

FYI Im using 3 AntiSpyware applications. as well as Antivirus(AVG 7.5pro) and Zone Alarm Firewall(ver. 6.0). So i can pretty much guarantee its nothing on my pc. All applications are locked in to not have access 2 the internet.

"netstat -e" give you the total bytes for all your network adapters, what you're seeing is probably some overhead of Windows networking.
Try "ping 127.0.0.1" (localhost, or your own computer), you'll see the byte count going up, but those bytes definitely are not going through MTN.

I use Kerio Sunbelt Firewall, so nothing gets out of my machine without me knowing about it.

That just on their data cards, what about their GPRS, when a GPRS connection is not available it automaticly connects on some sort of dail-up that charges you by the min. Also there is no warning about it.

Are you talking about the automatic fallback to CSD from GPRS.

I don't quite believe they can do that, but hey, I'm open to suggestions, even if an engineer at MTN said it was really happening.

Yip, my friend had just recharded her account, and connected through her cellphone on her gmail account, after she read her mails and did send 1 or 2 she checked her balance and 95% of her money was gone, phoned the MTN customer care and asked them what was going and they said and I quote " When a GPRS connection is not available the system automaticly connects through CSD and then you get billed per min." then we told them there was no warning of this and they said sorry they cant do anything about it.

TO ME MTN IS A BUNCH OF CROOKS AND THATS WHY WE DID PORT HER NUMBER TO VODACOM.

It's her own fault for not making use of data bundles. If she needs cheap Prepaid out of bundle rates Virgin Mobile is perfect for her. Vodacom dont need to be involved here. :)

AT the end of the day its basiclly all the same, Virgin works through Cell C and Cell C works through Vodacom.

Virgin is cheaper that i know my business number is with virgin the call rates is good but the speed of the data connection is some time up to S#it, hey but thats the way the cookie crumbles you cant get all the benifets.

some say Virgin Mobile was introduced to scheme the Vodacom and MTN Contract Customers out of a few extra hundred rands. Since You pay I think +R1 extra between network calls.

Now If you ported your number to virgin people will believe youre on Vodacom but you're not. (im not anymore) but stil pay the amount extra. Its afterall Vodacom who gave VM the contract in the first place. Surely Vodacom is the culprit who is making VM unstable, otherwise they would be shooting themselves in the head.

Ok let's set things straight here. When Cell C was first introduced they had an agreement with Vodacom to use their networks. At the moment over 80% of Cell C's network traffic are through Cell C's own towers.

The agreement between Virgin and Cell C is something like this. Virgin is allowed to use Cell C's network and towers as their own and they split the profits 50/50.

They Probably Bought over Vodacom's defective towers. They couldn't possible install their own. Secondly How about Virgin - What 'agreement' have they signed with the Devil(vodacom) in order to gain access to their network?

Or are you waiting for some BS press statement to take as truth
