MTN Connectivity loss after long periods

Hi,

We are making use an MTN connection that needs to remain permanently connected.
This is for a remote computer that establishes a connection to MTN via the RASDIAL command. The command runs every minute, in case of an unforeseen disconnection. This works great, however after a long period of remaining connected, there is a complete loss in sending and receiving data. This is anytime after 1 day to 3 days. Once the problem has occurred, a reconnect does not help; after reconnecting there is still no transfer of data. A reboot solves the problem.

I can work around this by either forcing a disconnect and reconnect at a set interval, or a reboot if the problem occurs, however I would like to know the cause…
Is staying connected for such long periods not advised? Any ideas on why after reconnecting the problem remains? I would like to avoid rebooting the PC if possible.

I have tried 2 different brands of modem:
1. Teltonika USB (Model TMU-105)
2. Huawei E220 HSDPA USB Modem (Using this currently, and connecting via EDGE)

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hi,

It is possible, however we have not activated this timeout, unless we missed one. I will have to look at it.

If you could please PM me your cell number, we could also start an event trace, that may indicate where the disconnect is originating from. (possibly a timeout on the PC as well).

My Huawei E220 modem connects at 3G speed, but after a while drops back to GPRS.

I'm wondering if it's not the same as iBurst - the tower 'services' the strongest signals and 'drops' the weakest signals.

Just wondering how it works....

There is something called "cell breathing" as far as 3G is concerned which is essentially the same thing.

Probably on the edge of the network and you should force your card to 3G only.

Huawei E220 is connecting to EDGE. Unfortunaly no 3G/HSDPA signal in this location. When connected its works fine and speed is good enough. The connection is set to 3G preferred.
