There is now an interactive coverage map on MTN's website.

and click on the "Are you covered?" block above the country map.

Read the instructions in the pop-up screen carefully.

It shows GPRS, EDGE and 3G and seems to work very well.

Check out roaming! I asked MTN to give guideline charges like Vodacom 3 years ago!
They got it now...and really detailed with GPRS availibility etc.Sms costs.Whether you pay for incoming sms or not...

Nice map and easy to navigate.

What I found of interest is how much less EDGE coverage MTN's got compared to Vodacom. The Vodacom coverage have got a funny skew, but as a % much more than MTN. Check out the map posted in the Vodacom forum.

And here I was under the impression MTN's got the country covered with EDGE.

Same with 3G, Vodacom is much better covered.

GPRS looks about the same.

I thought that, if our phone says "y'ello broadband", it means we have EDGE coverage.
My phone says "y'ello broadband", but the map shows no coverage.

Please explain.

I have a 6680, and my phone never says y'ello broadband, it only has a 3G logo under the signal tower when i have coverage. I seem to only go from 3G to GPRS (fast to slow). Is that normal?

Can we please have some replies from people who ARE using EDGE where the map shows no coverage?

You must remember that those maps are not 100% accurate but (computer) estimates based on the topography, available towers, distances, etc. Nobody actually went to each street to test the actual conditions there.

In my case I'm also not covered by EDGE on the map, but I have a good EDGE signal most of the time; but I'm close to the edge (no pun intended, or is it? <grin>) of the official availability. People 500m down the street only have GPRS. Whilst Bloemfontein is supposed to be covered by 3G as well, in practice it means mainly the city centre and a few bits and pieces of the surrounding suburbs.

In my case I am about 8km away from any EDGE coverage as shown on the map. But I am still connecting to an EDGE-enabled cell (all the closer towers are hidden by mountains).

If you are connected to an EDGE-enabled cell, does that mean you can use EDGE???

Well, according to MTN's new interactive map, half of Durban (including Pinetown, Kloof, Hillcrest, etc.) does not exist. Or maybe their coverage is so bad they choose not to include these areas on the map?

If you are connected to an EDGE-enabled cell, does that mean you can use EDGE???

It varies - I'm about 3-5km from two EDGE enabled cells and can lock onto them with software on my phone. I don't get the higher speeds though! (While other people have had more luck...)

Conclusion: unless you have a brilliant signal, you might not see EDGE speeds.

It certainly is WAY out if it's meant to show those locations from which your phone will naturally connect to an EDGE cell.

I Would love it if MTN actually can get a better map search function. I always struggle to get any address to be recognised by the site. I normally go for a main street miles away and then scroll to my area.

Vodacom, Cell C and 8ta have better maps that is really more user friendly.
