MTN cuts call rate to 79c per minute

THE FINE PRINT!!

2. Promotional Period

2.1 The MTN PAYG Bundles will be available from 17 March 2014 until 17 June 2014(the “Promotional Period”).

With MTN there are always terms and conditions. I much prefer Cell C's 99c per minute, per second. It doesn't change whether you're a contract or prepaid subscriber and it's not based on what airtime you've loaded and when.

Why can't this be just their standard rate like Cell C? Not impressed at all. I still wouldn't switch because I use more data than I make calls, and that's still very expensive

You have to load a bundle, plus use it within a certain period. Keep it MTN, still prefer Cell C where my airtime doesn't expire.

The article title is misleading.
This is a promotion and you have to subscribe to the rate.

Nope. The promotion is just confusing (which I'll deal with in a follow-up). From what I can see, it is available to anyone on MTN's default Pay Per Second call rate.

I'm still shocked that I committed to two years with MTN and some day tourist can walk in and pay less than half my rate to make a phone call! I simply have to be getting ripped off

I honestly don't care what MTN does anymore, they are a terrible company and love to confuse their customers.

Just happy I can use their network for free when I need to. :D

omg we can compete on price, for a while, notwithstanding the billions we are losing...
and does this not indicate that ICASA is on the right track with regard to call termination regulation?

...so you go to court and argue hand over heart that there is no relationship between a reduction in the wholesale mobile termination rate and reductions in retail rates to consumers....yet within two weeks of the wholesale rate coming down you reduce your retail rate?

ke?

Agreed...............

Agreed...............100%

ICASA needs to do away with promotional call rates as this affects market perception to the uninformed. Email will be sent this evening. No worries.

Anyone that signs a new contract with these morons, I will pray for you.

Sorry for those stuck in a two year prison sentence. I left their sorry despicable business years ago.

I will not support thugs.

+1

And it that two years of being MTN's prisoner, sorry customer, a R16000 data bill can arrive at any time.

From what I see, MTN Customers on "Pay Per Second" (was One4All) rate of R1.20 will now pay 79c.
Sorry, those loyal customers on contract can carry on paying R1.95/min-R2.30/min.

There is also a "R7, R12, R17 or R30 MTN PayAsYouGo bundles" that gives SMS's and Data, but same 79c rate.
There is explanation of the size/expiry of the R7, R12, R17 bundles which expire in 2/3 days.
What's the T&C for "R30 MTN PayAsYouGo bundle"?

Jeez people it really not bad at all. I suspect MTN is only keeping it a promo to see what will happen with the MTR in 6 months time. They don't want to lose customers just yet cause then they will lose more money on the MTR that are currently active.

That said this is a VERY good deal.

The R7 bundle gives you 79c rate + 25min MTN to MTN midnight bundle + 5 SMS + 5MB valid for 2 days and even if you don't use all the R7 airtime for calls or data the airtime does not expire meaning you don't lose ANY you just gain by buying the bundle. Wow this is a very interesting development.

Sorry Cell C but this is a better option FOR now. Does not beat Telkom Mobile Sim Sonke though.
