MTN defrauded of R50-million airtime, man arrested

Um... what did he do with the airtime? Print and sell prepaid vouchers/internet bundles?

^ This. How was he planning on getting rid of it?

Funny thing is, I watched The Office yesterday for the first time.

he will get off free....

I highly doubt it.

He made use of VPN to logon onto MTN's systems using employee logon information. As stated elsewhere, I wonder what actions will be taken inside MTN. I suppose their employees may be involved - the reason why they refer to a syndicate.

Also, he generated his own voucher codes and sold it off.

You can transfer airtime to a mate Vodacom. Maybe they can do the same on MTN?

My first reaction is shame, poor MTN, how does it feel being ripped off, like your customers are every day.
Second reaction is to feel bad at first reaction as crime is never justified.

^^^This... we all know that something is rotten inside MTN. The other banking/pin swap incidents are proof of that.

given the way MTN have screwed me over because of fraud on my account I don't share your second sentiment

A suspect in connection with stealing airtime vouchers arrested

MTN press statement:

Today MTN worked closely with the South Africa Police Service to arrest an individual suspected of stealing airtime vouchers worth approximately R5 million. The arrest comes after an intense internal investigation that led to the arrest in the early hours today.

“MTN aims to ensure that our customers are protected and our systems are fully operational to enable us to deliver quality service to our consumers,” explains Lilly Zondo, General Manager Business Risk Management at MTN SA.

“Through continuous monitoring, which has taken us approximately 18 months, we were able to conclude the investigation and are satisfied to that the negative impact that may have been posed by the suspect is done away with.”

Zondo concludes that cybercrime is on the increase globally, for MTN this arrest is a big “breakthrough”. “We have been proactive in our approach, and this is testament to prudent work done.”

The matter is now sub-judice therefore MTN is unable to divulge further details regarding the case.

+1

They take theft of money, especially large sums like this, more seriously than murder - makes you wonder how the authorities set their priorities!

Yes, because your systems was breached by unauthorized persons who had access to the whole of MTN's systems, including client information and much more.

Article says 50mil but MTN press release says 5mil.....

Im so so glad MTN got ripped off. Could it not have been R500 million.
