I don't really know how the billing cycle works, but I think I get the bill for it the month after, and only pay that bill the month after that. Should probably find out for when I want to stop my contract, but I know there is some lag time in there and it will definitely be more than 7 payments. The August payment will normally only be done in September/October? But then again my billing cycle is not 1st to end of the month. And I also don't pay end of the month.

I will have to relook my statements, but ithe fact is it can't be more than R5000 even with that many payments outstanding.

I can live with the fact that they want to charge for an early cancellation. I have no problem paying them a reasonable amount. Had they told me that in order to cancel we would need to pay R1 000, I would have happily done so. But R5 500!? That is cheek, that is unconsiderate and that proves that MTN doesn't give too hoots about its customers.

I have absolutely no words to describe how I am feeling right now. I am beyond angry.
While I can understand your sadness and frustration, I can understand their side too.

Your mom owns 3 contracts (???), meaning you and your father actually owned/s none.
Your mom is still alive and well therefore the sad event does not affevt her contract(s). Sadly one of the dangers when signing something so another can have...

How many months are left and what phone is it? Maybr you can find someone willing to take over the contract...

Having also lost my father recently I know you wont see any humour in the irony right away. In my case I have inherited no money just problems and expenses and are beginning to see the humour. The thing is I know from experience at work is that there are people that have a relative pass away nearly every month end if they were given the change to opt out of a contract every time I could assure you that I would also be rid of my MTN contract right now.

HOWEVER....

Those people's relatives all probably had the contracts in their own names, meaning a death cert can be provided.

Fortunately for him he cannot say the same about his mother, only his father.

As I mentioned he can try find another willing to take the used phone and remainder of the contract...

You mom is still alive end of story! If it was under your dad's name the contract MTN would claim from your late dad's estate so there is no win to a lost cause.. Rather pay the outstanding months that are due example if your dad was on a R500 Package X 20months.. Then pay it up front.

I wouldn't do that. I would pay them monthly and use the contract. Paying them upfront means they score the interest and not you. It might not be much, but it is still interest.
