Any myBB users in Lonehill have fibre yet? I'm curious as to what performance you are getting.

Also, MTN claim to be open access, but haven't found any other ISP's to buy data on MTN fibre.

I am still waiting for the installation into my complex. A friend of mine has been connected for a few months already and it has been stable and offers the full advertised speed. Sadly at the moment you can only get data from MTN but I read a comment on an article recently where someone asked if Afrihost would offer data on MTN's network since they are owned by MTN. Afriman's answer was pointing to a yes so there is still hope at cheaper prices.

Hi Sabre & Steinholf,

FireStream can offer you services over MTN's infrastructure in Lonehill. Our agreement with MTN was finalised last week and we are in the process of updating our website with the relevant products offerings and pricing. In the meantime, perhaps PM me your contact details I will contact you to discuss in further detail.

Thanks

Well this is interesting...
Please PM me too... I was also under the impression that services can only be bought through MTN directly.

Had the 50Meg (capped) line from MTN for about two months now. Here is what I have learnt in that time.

Casual user:

- Great speeds for streaming
- Youtube videos load quickly
- Great download speeds for things like emails and updates
- Decent upload speeds
- Gets the job done

Intermediate users:

- Might notice drops during peak hours, speed can drop by as much as 2/mbps
- Router might require some tweaking as far as the 2.4g & 5g is concerned- older tech might require two sets of settings to run on the router at the same time
- Beware the installation- they might charge if they have to use more than 15 metres of fibre cable
- Boosters work well- Signal strength can still carry up to 3 mbps
- Sitting on a cap of 200Gigs anytime data with 200Gigs night time (12:01am - 06:00am)

Gaming:

Jumpy local pings (BF3, BF4, TF2)

When the speed is stable, you can expect pings of 5ms and closer to 1ms if you are close to the local server. Definitely impacted the experience playing BF. Packet loss reduced (Used Teamspeak as a reference point).

- Jumpy international Speeds

Titles like World of Warcraft may benefit if the line is stable- ping is almost always in the green.
People playing titles like Overwatch will be disappointed (Averaged a speed of 190 -220ms(No VPN used))
- Other tested titles - Paladins, BF4 (Stable - +- 80 - 125ms Euro)

No game tests on consoles

For the hardcore downloader:

General downloading (Pictures, songs, Youtube, E-mail & updates)
- Great all round

Torrenting & P2P
- You can expect some throttling up to +-85% at times

Fastest download times (Steam, Origin, Chrome, Itunes songs)
- Steam (1 gig update) - less than Five minutes
- Origin (1 gig update) - closer to Eight minutes
- Chrome (Video 100mb) - less than Thirty seconds
- Itunes (Song 15mb) - less than Ten seconds

For the streamers:

Youtube - HD videos never got close to the grey bar
FB - Almost instant seamless high quality playback
Vimeo - Basically the same as YT

Netflix - Jumpy quality when multiple devices are active - Would recommend setting maximums on the router for connected devices -> HD Ready (720p) works well with a 2meg hierarchy (+- 200kbps)- HD should do fine with a 5 - 8 Mbps hierarchy (500kbps)! Without setting maximums, quality may drop drastically if phones, PC's and laptops come into range of the router.

Not tested - Showmax or DSTV Extended bouquet

Pricing & Misc:

Currently paying R799 for the above option (Ex installation). Took up to 2 weeks to install, operators will normally say within 2 weeks- we were sorted at the end of this period. Install ended up being around R1300, we also bought the router through the company at around R 700

Capped 200 DAY + 200 NIGHT (Night time cap was an added promotion)

We opted for the Month-to-Month. Big reason for this is the stability and pricing. Going to swap when a better offer comes along and for some reason, areas in Lonehill are firmly in the grasp of MTN and they are not allowing competing ISP's in- despite promises made as far back as 2015!

Final thoughts:

If you need to download and update fast- this is for you. As a gamer, pretty disappointed with some of the international pings where barely any ms drops were achieved- many of the speeds were the same as my previous 2meg...considering this is a 50 meg line it is pretty disastrous. More frustrated with the local spikes in games such as BF- when it is stable it is beyond amazing.

***UPDATE***

Latency at +- 190ms after 7 (Overwatch)

MTN doesn't seem to be responding to any of the ISPs, and Smartvillage is owned by MTN if i'm not mistaken.

This is BS, netflix should not be jumpy if multiple devices are connected. Heaven sake, at my house, my tenant can be watching netflix, as is my son, while I am doing online gaming with the PS4, and none of them shows a hint of stutter. You are getting screwed

I've been trying to obtain MTN's Open Access Agreement for sometime, since they are "Committed" to an Open Access network but without any success.

They claim that that do not support any 3rd party ISP's at this time, but maybe in the future. It sounds like they don't want to vs nobody is interested.

I have MTN Fibre available to me, and it was sold with the option to choose your ISP... but seems this is not the case....

On 29 January 2016, the Commission approved with
conditions a merger whereby Mobile Telephone Networks
(Pty) Ltd (“MTN”) acquired Smart Village (Pty) Ltd (“Smart
Village”). MTN is a global communications partner and
cellular network operator. Smart Village is mainly active
in providing fixed line fibre broadband access to the
residential market.
The merger presented a horizontal overlap in relation to the provision
of fixed-line broadband fibre optic access network as both parties
deploy fibre in gated residential estates. Both parties also operate as
Internet Service Providers and offer internet connectivity services to
residential estates where fibre is deployed. The Commission found
that each gated residential estate constitutes a distinct separate
geographic market as gated residential estates generally do not
permit the duplication of fibre infrastructure in the respective gated
estates. In that regard, there was no geographic overlap arising in
the assessed markets. Smart Village holds 100% of the market in
each of the gated residential estates wherein it has laid the fibre,
thus the merged entity would have monopoly power over each of
the gated residential estates.
The Commission found that the vertical relationships arising
from the merger would result in a substantial lessening and
prevention of competition. The merged entity would acquire a
position that would allow it the ability to exercise market power.
This could be exercised through foreclosure strategies over its
fibre infrastructure in the gated residential estates. In addition, the
Commission found that the merged entity would have the incentives
to do so as MTN is also able and intends to expand its downstream
services offerings in the gated residential estates. Such foreclosure
conduct would ultimately harm consumers in those estates where
such conduct would be perpetuated and prices are unlikely to
decline when there are no viable competitive choices. MTN would
also be in a prime position to leverage market power on its fibre into
downstream services such as internet connectivity, TV on demand
services and security services through bundling strategies.
The Commission found that the input foreclosure strategy could
be remedied through the imposition of conditions relating to open
access model to the fibre infrastructure on fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory
terms and having transparent and market related
pricing. With an open access model, customers in gated residential
estates would be afforded choice in terms of product and price
offerings.
The Commission was further of the view that as long as
MTN’s ability to leverage its market power over fibre is curtailed
by the adoption of an open access model on a non-discriminatory
basis, other potential exclusionary strategies such as bundling are
also unlikely to be achieved.

Update from anyone on this? This whole MTN / Lonehill was such a BS decision without the involvement of the community. No other ISP can use the infrastructure so we are stuck with MTN who charges exorbitant prices for Fiber.

BS I tell you!

Why not go for Metrofibre who have service in some ares of Lonehill? We installed them in Beverley at the end of last year and they are working fine, better pricing and options for 3rd party ISP's. We wouldn't sign with MTN due to their 7-year restriction on any other provider coming into the complex and the lack of open access.

Phoned them. Not available on the other side of Lonehill.
