She uses her card often and it works 100% during the day, but com 7:30/8pm the connection goes either extremely slow (time out slow) or does not want to connect at all. Vodacom works fine on her laptop. We live just outside Stellenbosch.

I have similar problems.
To be honest though , I have both MTN and Vodacom Sims on a e220 modem.
I think it is all congestion on the towers. Especialy towards end of the month as people start to rty and use all of their data bundle before it expires.
Maybe rollover bundles will help relieve the problem.

Now couple this with the lack of info from MTN regarding the new data price plans and I start thinking Vodacon prepaid.
I use my datacard often to upload websites and edit hosting packages and when I tried just that on saturday night and couldn't even upload a 70 kb file without errors (even with the dash showing full 3g/hsdpa coverage) I was not impressed. So stick in my virgin sim and boom no more timeouts!
I think MTN should start working on their problems or they will lose many of their high usage customers.
