I took delivery of my hsdpa usb modem recently. The maximum I am getting in strong-signal HSDPA areas are about 300 kbps!...and averaging under 100kbps. Most of the time I would say I get between 50-60 kbps. The 2 GIG bundle that MTN is offering my be cheaper but the speed aint worth the HYPE!.... tried different mainstream areas in sandton/rivonia on various lap tops and desktops(decently spec'd machines as I use them to develop software)

Have to agree with Storm here. I had the technical guy from the local MTNSP shop out to my house before the special was launched, and he got speeds of up to 1.2 Mbps to various speed testing sites both locally and international. I must add here that we did the tests BEFORE the specials were launched. The aim was to compare the data rates between MTN and iBurst.

I am getting him out tomorrow again to repeat the testing, as I am really struggling to get better that 400 kpbs, with averages ranging between 100 and 200 kbps most of the time. It will be interesting, I will post the results here as I still have my iburst modem active.

Hope someone from MTN pays attention to our cries...

There's something not lekker with the HSDPA network

I'll have to check it when I'm in later tomorrow afternoon

I agree that the specials have affected the download speeds. In the past I often had download speeds around 700-900 kbps here at home (Tygervalley Centre in Bellville, Western Cape). I have a full HSDPA signal and can see the tower from where I sit, but download speeds vary between 100-300 kbps these days. Ek voel soos 'n kind wat se speelgoed afgevat is :(

MTN DD,

I would appreciate if you can still come on Tuesday. The person will tomorrow just compare his own transfer speeds with mine using his own laptop. This is just to confirm that there is not something fundamentally wrong with me home office setup.

I can call you when he is here, then you can perhaps guide us without coming out, is this OK?

Perhaps the way in which you can add most value to the benefit of all of us is to take some of these posts (and my detailed comparison, which I will send to you if you PM me an address) to the top echelons of MTN in order to address this rather serious problem. Some of us are really badly affected, and locked into 24 month contracts which is not what any of us expected.

I hope this finds you well mate.

I'm not really surprised.
I think MTNDD mentioned the international link is 80 MB big.
Do the math.

@mtndd

Just to throw my 5 cents worth in as well: PLEASE, Lorraine Port Elizabeth area, could you ask someone to have a look. Even Virgin GPRS is faster and that is saying something........ Used to get great speeds but now, everything is sooooooooo sloooooooooooowwwwww, around 40 kb/s (bits) and frequently have to disconnect and reconnect, especially at night.

Really would appreciate it, thanks Dude.:)

Is the network overloaded now after the specials were launched?
