Interesting, over the last week or two I've been picking up a new 3G signal within the Meadowridge area. Wasn't sure which base station it was emitting from, I guess I now have a clue. Thanks.

Biggup!

What are the odds?! Live in the Diepriver area and also experienced a hint of 3g goodness.

Do you guys constantly have it or does it tease you like a stripper?
This is quite a big deal for us eh?
Last year the only mtn 3g i got was driving through Cape Town.

Why are these towers being activated in all the affluent areas first? I live 3KM, as the crow flies, from the airport where HSDPA has been activated for yonks already but only in and around the airport building. I don't think a YAGI would do the job for me so I just have to wait until things happen (in the previously..er..disadvantaged areas).

Sounds like you're on EDGE then.

Nope.
According to speedtest below , its definitely in the GPRS speed range.
This from GamCo

Your current bandwidth reading is:
40.90kbps

which means you can download at 5.11 KB/sec. from our servers.

Sounds like you're on EDGE then.

MTN_DD there's still many suburbs in Jhb south/southwest that don't have 3G coverage yet - any idea when they will be going live?

Thanks

The part of Steenberg I live in could hardly be called affluent middle class yes but definately not affluent. I believe the tower is at Plessy or Tellumat as its now known which would cover a fair bit of Retreat (previously disadvantaged).

Affluent?
You obviously dont go to these areas do you?
Most of these suburbs are leafy, think i should send yr message to the residents association.

These so called speed tests arent always correct. The gamco one tells me my bandwidth is 338.50kbps with download speed of 42.31KB/s

iBurst says its 236kbps.

Very big difference. Btw test were done on HSDPA so who knows how they work that out.

Did someone mention all the "affluent" areas having their 3G activated? Guess they consider southfield the same as constantia if thats true

As a matter of fact, Im on the road everyday, driving from "here to timbuktu" at the drop of a hat. I've been inside Constantia mansions and bug infested shanties alike. Places like Retreat that hang off the fringes of "affluent" areas are only lucky to get 3G because of their spatial position not because the SP had them in mind when rolling out their 3G. MIDDLE CLASS areas like Steenberg, Plumstead and Southfield are AFFLUENT when you compare it to places like Manenberg, Heideveld, Guguletu and Tafelsig. Have you lived in these places before? Doesn't appear so. :(

Well it all depends what u compare them to. Obviously if u compare it to manenberg etc it will appear affluent but compare it to upper class areas such as constantia and its quite the opposite.
