MTN in hot water for offering “unlimited” minutes

The Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) has found MTN’s use of the term “unlimited minutes” in its mobile contract advertising to be misleading.

The ARB ruled on a complaint lodged against MTN’s online advertisement promoting its MTN Sky mobile contract.

The complainant argued that the advertisement was misleading as it claimed to offer “unlimited minutes” with an asterisk appended at the end.

The term “Unlimited” has become common in the industry to refer to products offering excessive amounts of voice, data, or SMS allocations. These products are typically top-tiered, and more expensive, thus necessitating comprehensive comparison before contracting.

unlimited

adjective
1.
not limited or restricted in terms of number, quantity, or extent.

Idiots.

MTN's explanation is bull. Just because something is commonly used doesn't mean it's correct. Just die already you scum.

How stupid can you be to offer something like that and not get caught?

Like Mwebs “uncapped” adsl..
It took a few phone calls , but eventually I got to a sympathetic call centre agent who said on my package , the uncapped data was actually 250gig per month.
Thank goodness, coz then I was properly able to manage my downloads.

Unfortunately, The issue is a problem throughout the marketing industry, not the companies they undertake marketing for. Marketing has this erroneous belief that they can do just about whatever they want.
It is really refreshing to see that some action, however small, has happened to correct the balance.

what a bunch of ****ing morons. If you have advertise something with t&c's like, uncapped or unlimited minutes, you can't put a cap on it in the t&c's

did they really think that's NOT misleading advertising? at least when it's uncapped you can get throttled in speed, but not have an imposed hardcap/limit.

MTN really personifies the collective IQ of our people

I was on an uncapped , all you can eat, but was cut off with zero access...
However, you are missing the point, and the spirit of this thread.

Yes Mweb's uncapped was also a joke when it became clear they were measuring according to usage and not the criteria set out in their Ts&Cs. Instead when people complained they just pawned them off onto their premium packages.

Yes, I'm still not happy with their interpretation of 'uncapped' though...
