Hello

One of my friends has an iPhone 5 on MTN contract, with MTN nano sim. Got it about 3 months ago. MTN say that the LTE is enabled, but he just gets 3G on the phone. Is it possible he was issued a nano sim that doesn't support LTE? Is there a way to check? I thought all nano sims were LTE capable?

Hi,

My wife recently upgraded to the Note 3 LTE version. She also had a sim swop to a nano sim. On the sim card is said LTE.

So maybe you need to change it to one that says LTE ?

Yes, it's iPhone 5 from MTN and MTN issued nano SIM from July.

Not meaning to be rude, BUT....

That means nothing. You have to make sure the SIM is LTE, else it will not matter if it is enabled on the sim, nor will it matter that the SP's network is LTE enabled.

And that is for all SP's. The person should confirm with a store, if the SIM is LTE capable or not.

You realise this is what the thread was about? To ask how to identify a LTE SIM since the shops were closed on a Sunday. Reported for trolling.

My dad's been on MTN with an iPhone 5 and I've never seen LTE in the status bar. Maybe I should investigate for him...

So sweet of you ;) :p

Bottom line is - unless the person kept the card that housed their SIM, at the time of buying, you cannot tell with many SIMs, as the "logo designs are periodically changed. However a store can look up said info.

I thought that you would simply need a 64k sim then lte will work if activated by the provider......

I confirmed this with a vodacom prepaid 64k sim that I just cut to the nano sim size and got a sms 5min later saying lte is enabled......

With MTN I had to call 808 to activate the LTE part of the connection after a SIM swap, it is not auto-activated on their network.

In order to use LTE on MTN you need a 128K sim which can be identified by the 3G or LTE branding also you need to call 808 to activate LTE VAS.LTE will not work on a 64K sim at all even you have the LTE VAS added

This is not true..... Vodacom works fine on 64k sim why would MTN not... Unless they put that restriction in place

It's true there is some restriction on the LTE service as you need a 3G or LTE sim which is 128K .
I have tried and tested it my bro has the normal 64k sim identifiable with no LTE or 3G branding he has the LTE VAS service added,In our area there is 4-5 bar LTE coverage if you force LTE/4G it will say no network on his BB Q5 we did the same test on a iPad 4 same result.
The MTN breakable microsims have LTE written in the non breakable part.
But I have experienced an average of 35-45MBps over LTE on my Nokia Lumia 820

Im totally shocked that mtn has so much lte coverage that is not on the coverage map..... I just put a top up sim into my iphone 5 and wow after calling 808 to activate lte the lte indicator popped and gave me speeds of 30Mbps..... According to the coverage map we dont eve have lte in Richards Bay...... So it looks like the lte signal is just lurkinng around and you should check for coverage..... What seems interesting is I have a very very old sim but it does say 3g on it..... It looks like a 64k though but not sure.... I want to test a prepais sim to test but its very difficult to get it activated cause the 173 call center is very clueless

I'm getting really confused now....

0831555 was able to activate LTE for me on a prepaid starterpack that I bought from the MTN store. I am however not picking up LTE on my iphone 5 with that sim though....

So I tried with a very very old top up sim that is still active and it works with LTE.

So how can a sim that is about 5 years old and 64k be able to handle LTE without a problem but prepaid 64k sim is not.

I'm trying to figure out why MTN is making it so hard to get the LTE service running for everyone?

So I'm just relaxing at home today and just now suddenly wow LTE pops up on my iphone now. There was just 3G usually but now its LTE with speeds of 30Mbps +

Pretty impressive. Looks like MTN is aggressively extending their LTE network. I mean I counted atleast 6 LTE spots in Richards Bay which is not even that big.

So I took a drive with a vodacom simcard and although I got a sms saying LTE is activated I could not pick up LTE anywhere in Richards bay.

Is this on your prepaid sim?
