MTN may have paid a bribe says Iraj Abedian

Paying a bribe to one of the most inhumane regimes in the world. Nice going MTN.

I don't doubt for a second that mtn paid moneys to advance their position...

they might have... they could've...they must've.... I don't think that kind statements can stand up in court. I'm not defending mtn but this to me is just a witchhunt. if turkcell was genuine it could've brought the case right here. taking it to the US, a country that doesn't even diplomatic relations with Iran looks very dodgy to me. chances it will fail cause if the US courts take the case it cause a very bad precedent

Why did Turkcell wait this long anyway before making any challenges to the bid?
2004 was a long time ago.

I don't really see the point of this article. Iraj Abedian, please show me one western country that is not guilty of bribery, corruption and blackmail. It's rife here on your door step. The USA for example pays millions of dollars in "contributions" to countries just to exact their influence in a country. Is that not a form of bribery? And should that county not do as they're told, then the US government is quick to threaten to take it away. Is this not a form of blackmail? Look at our own country for example. The scandal surrounding the purchasing of airforce and naval equipment. It was mired in controversy about bribery and corruption, and our own government is doing their utmost to suppress that information. The president of this country is involved as well and is seen as someone who may or may not have been taking bribes.
You speak about companies doing business with the Nazis. You seem to have forgotten to mention Siemens, who apparently built the ovens that gassed thousands of people. Where is Siemens today? An international brand with a global footprint.
So, I don't see the point of your article.

Good point.
The point of the article is to appeal to a sympathetic western audience. The same reason they admit to taking it to the US, they will have a sympathetic "jury".

Glad I left MTN (but not becuase their business "practices"). Their network is really crappy (3G is a joke and EDGE... Well it just does not work - tested country wide)...

But they are an (South) African success story. So they must be doing something right. Even losing Iran will still make MTN a future "proof" company.

Read the book "Confessions of an economic hit man". Explains just how corrupt the west can be.

Who cares if they paid a bribe?? Cost of doing business in Africa and the Middle East

one thing is proven to me after reading the responses here, is that when morality is pitted against money, money wins hands down.
