MTN numbers ported to CellC don't exist on MTN anymore?

I ported to CellC from MTN a couple weeks ago and I noticed today that I can no longer be reached by MTN subscribers. The network reports to them that my number does not exist.

I've obviously logged a ticket with CellC's porting department to look into it and they have sent a routing update request to MTN for my number, which they say could take 24 hours to be actioned. So I wait, unreachable from my old home network. :(

After speaking to a few more people, however, I found out that at least one other person on MTN had the same problem reaching one of his contacts today (who ported from MTN to CellC some years back). Which got me thinking, the problem may be more general than just my number being missing from a routing table...

Is there anybody else who ported from MTN to CellC that cannot be reached by MTN subscribers this week? Of course, like me, you may not be aware of it unless the poor soul trying to reach you manages to get hold of you out of band.

I've had a similar problem between Cell C and MTN numbers, and between Cell C and numbers ported to ECN VoIP, but this was about 6 months ago.

More recently, I had the following problem, between MTN and Cell C numbers:

Dead calls & crossed lines between MTN & Cell C subscribers

Which resulted in MyBB doing an article about it:

Network problems impact Cell C customers

Do you think your problem is related to the above? If so, send me a PM, and I can get the guys at MTN who helped me out, to have a look at your problem.

I am suddenly experiencing something similar.

My number was ported to Cell C from Vodacom two (2) years ago and everything was fine, I could receive calls from MTN numbers without any problems. In fact, the last MTN number that came through was on Monday. Since then contacts/numbers from MTN get the message that the number they have dialled is incorrect.

This has been going on since yesterday. Vodacom/ Cell C*and landline numbers get through with no issues at all.

I know you wrote that you ported from MTN while I ported from Vodacom. This all leads me to think and believe the fault lies with MTN.

I ported my MTN number to Cell C. Now I can't phone my wife on her MTN number. I get a message saying "the number you have dialled does not exist" Who do I contact with regards to this? How can this be resolved?

I suggest you ask this question in the Cell-C section. Maybe the rep there can assist you.

Ported from 8ta to Cellc and guess what. 8ta numbers can't call me. The number does not exist.

You need to call cellc porting department and tell them they must send the request to the effected networks that they must ujpdate the routing. Happens if you port and the system does not update the routes. They will email a request to the Network which will take 48hours but will get fixed.

call 140 and ask to be transferred to porting department. I have the guys email in porting department that I spoke to if you want.

Amazing, this seems to be a widespread problem.

Echo what has been said, unless someone tells you through another means, you won't know that you aren't reachable anymore!

I ported from MTN to Cell C on Friday. Didn't take long for it to go through and I haven't had a single issue. Can definitely contact and be contacted by MTN numbers.

The problem is you can't check every provider nowadays. With my port from MTN to Cell C it turned out after a year that Neotel numbers couldn't call me.

Doesn't bother me. I know that all the people I care about can contact me so it's chilled.

Had a similar problem, years ago. Ported a number from MTN to Cell-C and couldn't reach that number.."number does not exist on MTN network". Turned out the problem was on the Cell-C side. As part of the porting process, MTN disconnected the number from their network, and Cell-C should have activated it on theirs. Problem was eventually fixed after calls to their call-centre, and a HelloPeter complaint when it wasn't resolved.
