MTN prepaid Call Centre no option for consultant and no option to activate CLIP

I recently migrated to MTN prepaid after having been on contracts for many years.

I only realised today that my CLIP (Caller Line Indentity Presentation) was deactivated when someone alerted me to the fact that my call to her was marked "private caller" and that she almost did not answer it!!! It is strange as CLIP is supposed to be free on prepaid and on by default.

Then I started researching to find a way to activate it. (The problem is not with my phone settings, I checked and it also worked until the migration. MTN's website says 1) Make sure your phone has this feature. 2) Call your service provider
I could not find any way to do it myself, eg by USSD of an option on a selfhelp voice number.

So I phoned the service provider which is MTN. First I found that I cannot use 808 anymore as my phone is not a contract phone anymore. So I was diverted to 173. I listened and explored al the menu options, but there is none referring to CLIP activation. AND THEN THE REAL SHOCK STRUCK ME!! ON THAT NUMBER THERE IS NO OPTION TO SPEAK TO A CONSULTANT. NO SUCH OPTION IN THE MAIN MENU, OR IN ANY OF THE SUB MENUS! I checked them all and even tried to press any numbers not already labelled, starting with 0, 9 etc, I really cannot believe this! Does this really mean that it is impossible to SPEAK to anyone at MTN if you are a prepaid customer? And that if there is something wrong you just have to suck it up, if it is not one of the things which can be solved with an automated selfhelp menu?

Can anybody help me with a method of activating my CLIP on the MTN side.

And does anybody know how a Prepaid Customer can communicate with MTN?

You press 0 to speak to a consultant.

A number of people have problem with CLIP on prepaid on the MTN network. I think MTN simply have problems on their network they seem incapable of resolving.

Another ongoing issue is your line reporting insufficient airtime and cutting off even when you have money.

I can help you, I went from MTN contract to prepaid recently.

CLIP is for numbers to display on YOUR phone, when someone calls you, so you are so barking up the wrong tree. If someone calls you and their number displays, your CLIP is enabled... Capisce?

Your problem is that your caller ID on YOUR phone is on "Set by network" (or similar) instead of "Yes" (or similar). So depending on what phone you have, go to Settings, probably under Calling, look for something like My Caller Identity.

Thnxbye

I had to go into a mtn store, and let the person there figure out how to get hold of a call centre agent. On prepaid you have to dance around the customer service number to get to a consultant- there is no direct option in the menu. Worst network for customer service EVER

I did try that, but it did not resolve the problem. In the end I did manage to get to MTN via a sneaky way and now it works. It seems that somehow their network blocked my number even though my phone sent it.

I have found a way to speak to an MTN consultant even if you are a lowly Prepaid Customer!

According to several people at MTN shops this is the only way they know about.

But you must be willing to lie... sort of...

1. Dial 173
2. Choose the option which includes "SIM swap"
3. Choose "SIM swap" again
4. Ignore all the nonsense about information that you will need to do a SIM swap and wait till you get an option to now speak to a consultant about your SIM swap.
5. When you get to the consultant, tell them your real problem, they will help you even though you lied to get to them

Last time I had to get hold of a MTN prepaid centre agent, I had to go to a MTN store, wait half an hour in line, then ask the MTN store person to help me get hold of a call centre agent. Fkn ridiculous.
