MTN prioritizing contract data users?

I have a MTN branded Fastlink E620 data card that I use for internet at home. I can connect via 3G and normally get speeds in the range of 15-20 kB/sec using a MTN prepaid sim card. Recently a friend of mine came for a visit and he used his laptop to connect using his own MTN branded E620. I was amazed to see hom consistently get > 100 kB/sec downloads. So as a test we plugged his E620 into my computer and I got the same > 100kB/sec download speeds. The only difference between the two cards is that I have a prepaid sim card and he has a expensive contract sim card. So what I want to know is; is MTN giving better quality service to their big spending contract clients than their humble prepaid clientbase?

Nope, I have 2 contracts with MTN and if you have a look in this forum you will find that we also have speed problems like everybody else.

So what could the difference possibly be? Different firmware/hardware versions?

Modem configuration on the PC.
Subtle hardware differences like a more sensitive receiver.
Firmware.
different APN

Try all the swopping permutations, your SIM in his card, in his PC...

Well if you -REALLY- want to test that, ONLY swop the simcards [not the datacards too] . Maybe your datacard isn't performing.

Plus, i would think if there's any prioritizing going on, it would be on prepaid. Reason? On Contract you are "stuck" with it and MTN probably only have to deliver the "bare minimum" to you. On prepaid, if speeds -consistently- suck you simply pick up your Vodacom sim .....no 24 months to get out of, you move...and it's a dead loss for MTN.

..obviously vice-versa with Vodacom.

Actually I'm just jealous that his is so much faster from the same spot. Its not really a problem, I was just wondering what the reasons might be. I'll try and swap the sims only next time he's around and see what happens. It'd be sad if it turns out to be my card, cause what can you really do about that.
