MTN provides details of war against battery thieves in South Africa

MTN has provided insight into its ongoing battle with battery thieves and criminal syndicates in South Africa.

The mobile operator has seen great success in combatting battery theft at mobile base stations this year – a problem which is rampant in the country and affects all mobile operators with a physical network.

“Highlights during the year was the launch of MTN’s 5G network in June and the implementation of a new 360 Plan Security Model, which led to a significant 49% reduction in battery-related theft and vandalism incidents from the previous year,” MTN said.

It's a losing battle... if the Government has no will to take on the criminals, then ultimately we will lose this fight.

Pity real drastic measures can't be implemented like as soon as the base station is breached acid or napalm or the likes is sprayed on the perps. Suppose not because they have rights.

I think the solution was to remove the batteries alltogether, because it seems that as soon as the power goes out, so do MTNs towers.
Maybe I've just been fortunate but my MTN LTE signal via AH has stayed up in both places I've resided at over last 18 months.( 3 actually if you count the temporary accommodation I was at for a week during this period).

Once of the reasons I've stayed with them, as well as the speeds and uptime/connectivity.

YMMV

You are lucky indeed, my new tablet I bought wifi only because no power, no cell signal.

I wonder if these pcs of turd hit remote areas more...would be curious to see the stats.
I guess towers affected in metro areas might also get seen to quicker/have batts replaced faster....hence less
disruption to connectivity for clients.

Hold on, so was Covid and shutdown MTNs contribution to society? Because if I'm not mistaken, that would be the number 1 reason for a drop in crime this year.
