MTN's warning about Vodacom, Vumatel deal

MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita has warned that if South Africa’s competition authorities don’t start allowing consolidation in the telecommunication industry, the country will begin suffering from underinvestment in digital infrastructure.

This comes after the Competition Commission recommended against a proposed deal between Vodacom and Vumatel-owner Maziv.

If Maziv is sold, MTN will have less barriers when they buy Telkom
Voda buying Maziv is along the same line as MTN buying Telkom/Openserve

If precedent is set, consolidations cannot happen. It would be a barrier. Without larger mergers - I fear the worst for South Africa. We however need competition hence MTN's comments they are very aware, and potentially have a counter to this deal.

Maybe consolidate/buy out larger FNO's i.e. MTN - Metro Fibre merge Super Sonic and call themselves MEGA Networks. Then we have Mazif and Mega. Just an idea.
