MTN sim card = EVIL!

I've recently upgraded to an MTN procall 120 contract with a Sony Ericsson k810i...

And, my phone is constantly connecting to the network and interfering with my computer speakers (you know the irritating "dit dedit dit dedit") every minute or so. *constantly*. I also notice a foreign icon at the top of the phone's display, indicating a program running in the background.

It's driving me nuts! I put my old CellC pay-as-you-go sim card into the phone, and all the above symptoms magically disappear.

Now, this is obviously bad: - wastes your battery, - what the hell is it transmitting (phone location)? - interferes with other electronics - bad for your health...

Has anyone had similar experiences with the preloaded crap they package with your sim card these days? Any idea on how to stop this sort of thing?

First you need to find out what is using the data connection. Only then can you find a way to stop it. Also check if you are being billed for the data usage because you could run up a heavy bill. The default connection settings will be for MTN therefore a sim from any of the other networks won't cause the same problem. Oh, and welcome to the forum:)

Thanks,

And dont worry, I found out what was causing all this trouble..

The MTN reception in my area is very bad and the icon that I mentioned was in fact the 3G icon.. The phone was trying to log onto the 3G MTN network whereas I dont have proper 3G reception in my house..

Switched to MTN GPRS network; problem solved!

Sometimes it helps to talk about your problems :p

Maybe the phone is hunting between 2G and 3G?

If a 3G-capable phone, try and force it to 2G-only (GSM) and see if it helps.

Otherwise put the SIM in another phone and see if the problem follows the SIM.
