I had a similar situation when I cancelled my contract with Vodacom and tried to move to Cell C. Apparently if you cancel, go prepaid and then port, you have to wait six months before you can port- that was the reason given to me by staff in Vodaworld Midrand. (Can't remember if the Cell C guy said the same).

Not sure if this is even accurate or if they were thumb sucking or if this applies to the OP.
That's BS. There's no waiting period if you haven't ported recently. Going from contract to prepaid is not a port and the waiting period is only 1 month in any case. Wish companies in this country would start training technical support personnel properly instead of having them thumb suck.

From what I have read there is no need to move to prepaid before porting. Also, you cannot be denied a port out if your account is in arrears unless the service has been disconnected. The companies just want to ensure your account is paid up before you leave their network. The easiest is to insist you move to prepaid.

I eventually ended up calling the MTN porting department whilst sitting in a Vodacom store. Had the Vodacom rep submit the port request, and then asked someone from MTN to approve it while I waited on the line. They did so.

It's ridiculous that I had to go to such lengths to get MTN to release my number, but at least it's sorted now.

For anyone who sees this in the future: call 083 123 7667 for MTN's porting department.

So glad I'm finally on a different network :)

I have exactly the same problem.
going to call that number now...thanks!

NPC administers a Central Reference Database (CRDB) linked to the operators via a sophisticated network interface. The CRDB is an administrative database which used to track all porting process to effect the porting process from the intial porting request through to providing the new routing data to the operators so that necessary network routing can be updated.

An unnecessary step to slow the whole process down.
