I've got the MTN Uncapped Lite contract and brought my MTN Sh@reLink B683 router with me to work today, went online, did a few speed tests and I am totally amazed at the results.

I work in Brummeria, Pretoria and stay in Murrayfield, Pretoria. From my home to work is about 7km. At home, when checking the Gateway, I rarely get a signal above 2 lines and download speeds of about 90Kbps to 120Kbps (throttled) and 250Kbps to 450Kbps (first 3GB).

Here at work I get a full signal (4 lines) and did speed tests on speedtest.net and speedtest.co.za:

speedtest.net: upload 1.81Mbps and download 8.50Mbps
speedtest.co.za: upload 1935Kbps and download 5949Kbps

Obviously I'm not throttled at the moment but wow, I never realized that a full signal and a few kilometers can make such a huge difference.

Jip, wag maar net...
Once your throttled you'll be swearing like the rest of us for 24 months...

Borderlands 2 pre-order download from steam is 4.6GB = 8 days continuous downloading (4600/.4)/60/24
So maybe I'll be able to play it the 26th.

8 dae, goeie donner... My Borderlands 2 download het gelukkig nie so lank gevat nie...

I downloaded Borderlands 2 from PSN. It was 5446MB if I can remember correctly. I started the download on 2012-09-21 at around 03:30. The first 400MB went rather quickly, around 450Kbps, after that I got throttled and the speed dropped to around 90Kbps to 95Kbps and remained like that until complete.

The download was complete on 2012-09-22 at around 19:00. 5.5GB in plus / minus 40 hours. Not too bad... Been playing Borderlands 2 ever since. Great game!

I also downloaded Deus Ex: Human Revolution with the Missing Link DLC the other day. That came in at around 10.5GB. About 90% of it was downloaded while throttled. Took about 3 days.

I really appreciate the idea of MTN offering this contract. Having had a Vodacom 2GB databunlde beforehand with R2/mb out of bundle rates, my monthly bill usually spiralled out of control and was never under R2000.
The MTN Broadband lite is a great offer if you want to have the certainty of a FIXED monthly cost and are dependant on internet connectivety. The throttled speed of 384Kbs is bearable.
I think alot of you get the MTN Broadband Lite offer for the wrong reasons,
It is not intended for heavy downloading, but instead for a continous net acess with a fixed monthly cost and no nasty surprises at the end of the month...
it is not intended for heavy downloading etc,

Price has gone up then. When I took this package, it was R289. A few months ago it was on special for R199.

I agree with you 100%. I also had the 2GB per month Vodacom contract and it was totally inadequate for my needs.

So far I am extremely happy with this MTN contract. Yes, I suppose it isn't for heavy downloading but then again, when you need to download huge files, like games bought on Xbox Live and PSN, it's still good in my opinion. In fact, it's great to know that I can purchase a game on Xbox Live or PSN and I don't have to worry about the file size. Yes, it takes a while to download but even when throttled it's not that bad. As I said in my earlier post, I bought Deus Ex: Human Revolution (the complete version with all DLC) on PSN for R95 during a sale and it came to about 10.5GB. Now, that's quite huge and it took no more than 3 days to download.

I've read quite a few negative comments about MTN Uncapped Lite but again, in my opinion, it's great!

Yeah, it did go up. I applied for this contact during the last week of July. During that time it was still listed as R299 with a B660 router on the MTN website but when I applied the guy in the shop showed me the new price list for R319 with a B683 router.

In retrospect, its funny how when the uncapped lite packages came out people were raping the network 100 gigs on full speed for the month, causing untold chaos on the infrastructure. Now the throttle equipment comes into play and those same people complain, if not here then on other platforms- as in the rest of life we are the architects of our own demise;)

Well I applied for it last year oct for my folks...and it was blazing fast then (4Mbits).

Now I come back and it maxes at 310kbits, and its the beginning of the month.

My folks never really uses more than 3gigs, quite disappointed at MTN.

I am in Honeydew area BTW

That's unfortunate but ja, it seems that signal strength and location does play a major roll when it comes to download and upload speeds. You should contact MTN and ask them about it.

Man, I'm just glad that I can be online at home all the time and still have download speeds of 90Kbps to 120Kbps when throttled. To most people that is totally unacceptable but for me it's fine.

MTN is now the only Service provider with 3G in my area, and will be the only one for quite some time to come. I tested it with a prepaid sim card last night and got 1Mbps on speedtest.net.
Judging from the posts here, the capped speed is lower then the promised 256kbps.
Is this generally the case? Or are there actually people getting the 256kbps promised? (Yes. 256Kbps = 32 KBps)

I get the full 256Kbps and slightly faster at times as my download speeds are between 30KBps and 45KBps. Hope I dont jinx myself by making this statement.

I usually do the testing myself.....whilst downloading.....the speeds are clearly shown especially if you use browsers like google chrome or firefox....my dongle hardly does above 40KBps after 3Gig and I only get up to max 200KBps before 3Gig. I have the E367!

All of a sudden, since Tuesday I've been having EXTREMELY slow download speeds at home. Between 20Kbps and 40Kbps. Rarely goes above 45Kbps. What gives? And now, since this morning there have been nothing. No data download whatsoever. It's been smooth sailing since I got this contract towards the end of July but the last few days have been horrendous.

Even in the small hours of the morning, between 03:00 and 05:00, the speeds remain very slow.

20Kbps, 40Kbps and 45Kbps? because what i can gather.....you were only doing 2.5 KB/s, 5 KB/s and 5.6KB/s??

That's right. I do speed tests on speedtest.co.za and they give the upload and download speeds in Kbps. So yeah, 40 Kbps = 5KBps.
