MTN voicemail international roaming - unable to access mailbox

I am in the UK and have activated my MTN pay as you go to divert all calls to voicemail to save on roaming costs.
I set my mailbox up prior to leaving and have got a mailbox password.
If someone phones me it diverts direct to voicemail and they are able to leave a message (as I wanted)
I then get the sms to notify me that I have a voicemail waiting. (again what I wanted)
I then dial +27831000000 and am prompted to enter my mailbox number. I enter my number as 083*******, i then get a voice prompt: "Your mailbox is unavailable please try again later"

I have been through multiple customer service agents all replying with ridiculous answers like:
1. We see you are in South Africa, dial 100 for your voicemail - I am not in South Africa I am in the UK
2. Dial +2783100 for voicemail: Does not work
3. I was on voicemail lite and they needed to convert in to regular voicemail: Did not work

Please could somebody help
I am tired of dealing with people who know less about their voicemail and roaming products than I do
