Hello

Just want to clear up something. I bought some prepaid sims, which are used for data and voice calls. Using the MTN app, I see that they get the MTN zone discounts.

They are set to the Per Second billing (in the app), which as far as the MTN site says is not the same as the MTN zone package. The per second is 79c per minute and the MTN zone is 2.50 per minute but with discounts based on where and when you are.

Has that changed? Does the Zone discounts apply to the normal 79c system, or are these sims set to the Zone by default? Look, calls on prepaid are cheap no matter which one you are on, so I'm just asking this out of interest on what I'm seeing on the app vs what the MTN site tells me.

New simcards default to MTN Pay Per Second which is the 79c per minute to any network any time. The discounts you see is only for MTN Zone per second and is charged R2.50 standard rate minus the discount you see. You will get a popup message before the call is connected to confirm what percentage discount you will get.

There are some interesting things that I have noted with MTN Zone Per second and MTN pay per second 79c.

With MTN Zone you will need a 70% or higher discount to get a lower rate than 79c per minute. With MTN Zone the discounts on 3G is MUCH higher than on 2G. Why I do not know but it just is. I tested it in my S5. While connected via 3G it was 85% discount to all networks. Forced the phone to 2G only and the discount changed to 55%.

During the week you will only see high discount rates in the last and first 15min of each hour until 6pm where the discounts are higher. This mean for example 13:30 you might have 10% but 13:45 to 14:15 you will have 70% or above. So every 30min you can expect a high discount rate.

If you want to change price plans on prepaid you can dial *141*4#

I think Zone is the best plan right now unless you need to phone all the time during the week then it might cost you a bit more. This can also be reduced by just subscribing to a MTN WoW tier so you can at least get free MTN to MTN calls and a few mb data.

If you want a fixed fee no matter what who or what you call then 79c price plan is the best but it also means you could possibly spending a couple of rands more over weekends or high zone discount times.
