MTN's Shameless SMS-Spamming of their customers

I receive unwanted SMS marketing from MTN. The choice of words is questionable at best ("You have been selected for a free chance to win..."). Luckily, there is an option to opt out, so I reply with STOP. Lo and behold, two minutes later I receive the next SMS spam message from MTN. This is bloody ridiculous.

I now see that the STOP message has to be sent to a different number, further complicating the process of opting out. Also, sending STOP to this number (30246) yields no confirmation that one has successfully unsubscribed from this marketing. Just silence.

What can we do to stop this nonsense? Apart from using a SMS app that filters out messages by keywords?

It there a MTN rep who is willing to engage this issue? I just want to talk to a person at MTN who can actually do something about this.

Update: Ten minutes later, I received confirmation

Thank you, you have been successfully removed from MTN's marketing list.

I hope this lasts. This is not the first time I've attempted to unsubscribe from their marketing. I'll report back if I receive any more unwanted marketing messages from MTN.

I get the same all the time.. I just ignore and delete them (i.e. don't even hit the stop , opt out)

But, yes it's annoying.

I only joined MTN's network a few weeks ago, and many of the smses they've sent me contain genuinely useful info. Stuff like how to make a call that charges the recipient, new data promotions, how to transfer airtime, how to set usage limits etc. I just wish they didn't sms quite so bloody frequently, and that the spammy type messages weren't included in their repertoire at all.

I'll opt out soon probably, once it appears that there's no more useful info to accumulate.

They usually have one number dedicated to marketing. I blocked the number. (On CellC)

Cell C deny they send me spam. I really kicked up a stink, now I (only) receive 2 or 3 a month. Prior to that it was several a day

These lists are seasonal so expect more.

WASPA is a joke, so don't bother reporting it to them.

I do the same. I figured that if I select the "stop" or "opt out" all I am doing is confirming to the spammer that my number is 'live' and active

If you updated your sim card to lte and search the web on ios it will come up with an actual sim application (black screen takes over the phone) telling you to buy more data for Rxxx. Your options are agree or cancel. If you are on contract and accidentally click agree you get billed.

Add opt out to your spam phrases and any new variations you may get like opt-out etc etc . That takes care of most of the spam you get.
