Hi Guys,

Looking for advice on a muk-en-druk for my nephew. He is turning 8 next week and wants a digital camera. What do you guys suggest?

The A490 bundle at ORMS for R795 is about as much as I am going to spend so I'm looking for cheaper options. At 8 he isn't really interested in quality and features. Just having a camera.

What options are there from the Kodak or Samsung stables? Are the VTech kids cameras available in SA? Any other suggestions?

Why do people say "muk"? There's no such thing. It's "mik" - it means "aim"

Because it doesn't look as good next to 'druk' if it has an 'i' in it. Nobody ever said Afrikaaners make sense :p

Anyway, Subliminal, that's about a normal price for a digital camera with a card these days; in fact, most R1k digital cameras are prone to random failures, especially when using inferior shutter servos. The Powershot A490, at least, isn't exactly a poor camera.
That said, keep in mind that most kids, even at and especially at an age such as 8, usually only want a fancy digital device so they can have something other kids in class don't have or so theirs can be better than the other kids'. Keeping this in mind, your nephew may like the camera significantly less if there's a kid in class who's parents are willing to buy in a more expensive, fancier camera, and he may simply not make as much use of it afterwards 'because it's not so cool anymore'. The same ends up applying to cellphones - you're simply not cool if you don't have a smartphone with a touch screen like the other kids in class.

It's also important to keep in mind what the kid may do if they have 'their own' camera, or cellphone with a camera. If they know nobody else is necessarily going to be using it and/or accessing the photos on it, you'd be surprised at what they may take photos of and end up doing with the camera, especially with almost all modern digital cameras allowing video recording. Couple that with internet access and you may have a dangerous situation.

Giving your nephew the camera with the condition that his parents supervise his use of it may be a good idea. No matter how innocent or 'pure' you may consider him to be, you simply never know for a fact that they aren't doing things they shouldn't.

My humble apologies.

Well I doubt his mother will let him take it to school and knowing my nephew give or take a year it will be missing or broken. Hence I don't really want to spend R800. Its either the camera or a Mechano set which is around R499. Might just settle on the Mechano.

I've yet to see a boy that didn't love a reasonably fleshed out Mechano set, and for a few hundred rand I'm sure you could get a lot of pieces. Even if he doesn't play with it for long now, when he's older he'll think "damn, where did I pack in that mechano set..."

None needed, it was just a general rant.

I'm not sure what kids get excited about these days, but when I was 8, Mechano is what my dreams were made of.

I usually ended up playing with the boxes my presents came. Best thing ever was a box from a fridge or a stove, you could build a fort :D

Or maybe that was at a slightly younger age...

I have heard of children receiving bubble-wrap to play with for their birthday:)

The old lego was the bomb. The junk (aka Bionicles) that they make now tho :(. Very expensive and it doesn't stimulate the minds of kids to build their own inventions. The Technics series is still okay, but very pricey stuff.
