DStv-owner MultiChoice announces massive streaming video deal

MultiChoice has announced an agreement with Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky that will see South Africa’s broadcasting giant sell a 30% stake in Showmax.

The new Showmax group will be powered by Peacock’s technology. It will remain 70% MultiChoice-owned and will be 30% owned by NBCUniversal.

Sounds like they are moving further away from DStv streaming when most thought these two would merge eventually.

Hopefully their relationship with HBO won't be affected.

They deserve each other one just as shyte as the other

Peacock is the streaming service most likely to fail IMO. Imagine they collapse and Netflix buys them off.

I suspect it will no one wants to share 100% of their platform with another company. If it did it would be popular. Just ask your self why Netflix and amazon prime don't have such an arrangement probably because it will dilute who watches what. If HBO is no longer exclusive, it goes to say their content could be reduced to some extent along with their privileges. The only thing massive about this deal will be their downfall.

...once the deal is signed and unveiled, a new streaming box and decoder will be unveiled and whatever you own becomes redundant and obsolete.

This could be nice if we can get most of the PeacockTV content.

Don't get your hopes up too much, very dependent on the country. In NL we get a new service called SkyShowtime instead of Peacock/Paramount+ with "all the great Paramount/CBS originals".

Guess what? Still gutted series where only the last 4 seasons are available etc. The new stuff is there (the new Law and Order for example) but not the complete original or SVU.

Luckily, I guess, South Africa only has a single monopoly in DSTV so maybe it works out better for you.

Knowing how dstv/ multichoice operate they will screw the subscribers to maximise their profits with little or no customer care. But will watch this space and see if they will improve their customer orientation and mindset.
