Bad news for Rugby World Cup matches on Openview

The SABC will not be allowed to broadcast 2023 Rugby World Cup (RWC) matches on eMedia's satellite TV service Openview, according to an agreement reached with MultiChoice.

On Thursday, the DStv and SuperSport owner — which has bought the exclusive broadcasting and streaming rights for the tournament in South Africa — announced an agreement had been reached that will allow the SABC to broadcast 16 RWC matches.

Where is the suffering..? SABC will be broadcasting the games.. every one will be able to watch it, if they tune into SABC..
Well technically noone is paying their tv license so that'd be "illegal" too. Heck, I'd argue that the SABC / tv license situation is probably more legally enforceable than DStv trying to root out those geoip bypassers.

A lot of people watch SABC via openview, and don't have digital tuners installed
Yeah, but people have known for years that the day would come that SABC would switch to digital broadcasting.. if they haven't made a plan by now, that's on them..

So how does this work? Does SABC need to send an alternate broadcast stream to OpenView with other content during those game broadcast times?

If not openview then what decoder are people supposed to use to access Sabc to watch the games?

DSTV of course.

This is a scum move. What right do they have to restrict the platform once someone has payed for a license.

Digital TV and analogue are pretty much low penetration in the country these days, so this is still going to keep it on the multichoice platform. Wonder if the competition commission will step in.

This has to be an unlawful restriction. In my life i have never seen such a restriction in sport rights.

But most did. A openview decoder is a cheap easy solution vs a digital tuner. And it carries the exact same broadcast.

They did pay for a license, they paid for some rights, what the terms were for those rights are between MC and SABC, obviously one of them is it couldn't be broadcast on openview.

They paid for the rights, so yes they can dictate it, if the SABC paid for the rights they could dictate.
Actually they can't. They paid for the FTA rights to show it on their platform everywhere it is legally broadcasted.

Pretty much amounts to discrimination.
