MultiChoice, eMedia, SABC get warning from Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture

Not saying a monopoly is a good thing, Im asking, who of the other broadcasters have stepped up in terms of sponsorships? Which of them put money up in terms of sponsorships and sports development?
I don't know, but I'm sure many organisations will if the sports broadcasting is open to a wider audience.

So you say a Monopoly is a good thing?

Numerous organisations are likely interested in sponsoring sports development. Additionally, the more people who watch various sports, the better it is for both the sports and their sponsors.

Sports already have problems getting people into staduims to support the local teams.

If you can get the poor, still disadvantaged people to become interested in sports, that can change the local dynamic.

But so far, they are only interested in their own adgendas, of immediate gratification.

Sports will die, because the poor, do not have an option to buy in. Those with money, have the abilty to make choices, on where they spend their money.

More and more, of those who have choices are choosing to leaving DSTV.

Make big sporting events PPV like in the states.

I'm actually with the gangster, Multichoice paid exorbitant prices for exclusive rights to maintain their monopoly. Somethings have to change.

Maybe the broadcasting rights should not be that expensive...
What will change is MC running out of money - which is happening quickly.

This is probably an easy way out for them.
Which of the above broadcasters fund sports development in this country?

If the playing field is leveled, and super sport looses its hold, and its income on sports events, i have a sneaky suspicion that the sport development , sponsorships, etc will dry up as well
More likely is the converse.

If MC loses its hold another broadcaster with more reach could open that up nicely.

Agreed, the way it is currently setup, it is a very small exclusive, group, who are expected to keep the ball, rolling. Well, that ball is fast losing momentum, so they had better open it up, so they get more people to keep that ball rolling. If it stops rolling, then they are dead in the water.

This is BS, should be a set price and the channels that want to broadcast it, must pay that price? No bidding.
EDIT: Also, I would say this would be more "Free market" compared to what it is now, granting a monopoly. Giving the consumer the freedom of choice of where they want to watch rugby, or what broadcaster to use.
I agree. While at it, make all cars a set price too. That way everyone can choose what car to drive. Then we all sing koombaya

If SABC cannot afford to buy the rights, the problem is SABC for being run into the ground.

You can make an argument for local tours and maybe find some compromise.

But that won't fly where international providers hold the broadcast rights. Fifa, Sky etc. don't give a schit about fairness in SA, whoever has the deepest pockets can buy it.

The only thing within our control is possibly whether exclusive rights should be allowed in SA. And even then, the price still won't be within our control...

No the problem is Sports bodies, being bullied, into selling the exclusive, and Free To Air rights to DSTV. Also Sports Bodies just wanna grab the cash, and do as little as possible, with regard to those rights.

Too much trouble, to structure the deals to keep both sides happy. So just dump everything in DSTV's grubby little paws, and wash your hands of the issue.

Depends on the pricing. I'm not saying move to this model entirely, but why not have it as an option?

Sports bodies, can structure the deals such that both sides, can benefit, if they are too useless, well bye bye sports, for all. Way the cookie is going to crumble.

Adapt or die

Well, at the moment all car brands or second hand dealers are allowed to sell cars. The government didn't grant exclusive rights to, lets say as an example, that only Ford may sell cars to the public.

Who is going to fund the relevant sporting bodies if they do not get the required same amount of money that they did with current exclusive rights way ?

How is that working out for Multichoice?

The same people that fund them now. Also the growing of their sport, in areas where it has no traction, will also increase and widen their funding base.

Relying on DSTV for all your funding, is a short sited path to follow.

How did they do it a few years ago? Through sponsorships. But being accountable to your sponsors is too much effort, easier to take the easy money through broadcasting...
